Mystery metal tank under bus

We have a 75 GMC Capenter Cadet. It has a strange tank in the rear.

Stamped on the tank:
Midland

3500 cubic inches

It looks like a small metal gastank with only one line heading up to the engine compartment.

I am thinking that it must be a vacuum canister? If that is the case why was it mounted so far back bedind the axle.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Where does the line into the engine compartment terminate? That might be the clue that solves this mystery. If I were to take a guess though it sounds like a homemade auxiliary fuel tank.

Do you have air brakes? Is it a diesel or gas?

It has a 2 chamber master cylinder and a hydro boost system. No air brakes. Ill try to get a pic. It is clearly empty/dry when I knock on the bottom of tank.

Ya, tracking down the lines is the place to start.

We will track it down when we have time, I just thought someone might know off hand. Ill keep you posted. My bet is that its a vacuum accumulator. Ill try to look in the AM.

Back to the gas or diesel engine question. Diesel engines don't produce vacuum. So unless there is a separate pump there will be no tank. Gas engines typically pull vacuum and larger vehicles will have a vac tank.

Sorry I must have left out that it is a gas engine.

Then very likely a vacuum, but the lines still need to be followed to make sure.
