I have the 671 Detroit in the midship position. It's loud, but not overly so. I have carpet over the engine area so that helps to reduce the noise somewhat. I guess I've just never noticed it before as I have driven these vehicles all my life...just a normal sound to me. Mine is certainly less quiet than some of the forward control engines I have been in. Not sure how far along with your conversion you are, but I think you will find that the more stuff you put in, the less noise you will hear.
