Paint Job Done!!!

Finally!!! My paint job is done. took all of 4 weekends, but its done. Not too shaby for my first time ever doing a vehicle paint job. the bus is just so damn big though so I made some mistakes... Taping is a mother of a bitch though. I dont think I could do it again anytime soon. Still have a few small things to finish like cargo door locks, the grille, windows etc. Also, there are a few spots to touch up.

For all those who are about to paint and have never done it before like me, my biggest piece of advice is make sure you tape off real good in any cracks or bends, or other objects of the body.

Well, here are some pics and you can also check out the full story and more pics here http://www.dammitandy.com/bus/05-spring05.htm

Nice job! Did you spray, roll or brush?

Cheers,

Jake

Hey Jake, I sprayed... I began to role primer the way that Eric von Kleist
did, but I was either doing it wrong, or had the wrong paint or something. It was giving a real rough, dry-wall look to it. So we quit that right away and sanded it back down to smooth. I decided to take advantage of some of the resourses I had with an empty shop with air and a giant exhaust vacume, and my buddy's paint gun. There is still some spots where you can tell the primer was rolled but it's not that noticable unless you're close.

I used Plasti-cote's BPS Tractor & Implement and thinned it with acetone. For primer I used Rustoleum rusted metal primer.

Its just a rusty old bus anyway.

I'm rolling and brushing. I thought foam rollers were going to be the ticket, but they don't seem to work well with True Value XO-Rust - a regular old short knap roller worked much better.

Cheers!

Jake.

Extremely nice

That looks extremely well done! Congratulations. I think you got a nice balance graphically. The bodywork (windows, awning, etc.) looks really professional, too. I think you made a wise choice on using the resources available to you...and when working with A) a 20 or so year old bus (in my case), and B) a limited (very) budget, it's all about resource-stretching!

Don't sweat an imperfection or two...if it looks good from 20 feet away, you'll win most people over at that distance, and when they get closer than 20 feet, your natural charm will distract them from any minor blemishes!

At least that's what I keep telling myself....

Again, that's a very nice paint job!

I think that our buses are like a lot of women......they're what I refer to as "hundred footers"

"They're good from far, but far from good"

Pretty much every bus i've come across is less than pefect when you get close enough to inspect it. I know my bus doesn't have an auto show paint job....more of a pole barn paint job, but it's ok. Exactly as the previous post stated, the bus draws their attention from far away, and when they get close, they're usually too overwhelmed to notice minor imperfections in the paint and other things.

This weekend I finished my touchup work. She's looking good now. Blemishes of the same color look way better than of a different color.

We also got the windows in! Finally! She is ready to roll now. granted, the interior isn't quite started yet, but it looks cool as hell.

My site is currently down but should be up soon. doesnt matter anyway, I didnt get any shots of the new windows yet. I'll keep everyone posted;)

Awesome job there, Andy! I like how it just screams "I'm not a cookie cutter RV!"

Ok, now you gotta spill the beans on where you got that awning. I'd like one for TCD as I'll be spending more time out than in. :P

I was desparate to get an awning on the cheap. So I was keeping an eye on ebay for a few weeks to see what came and went. It's tough when you ebay not to just bid on the first thing you see the first day you start researching. especially when there is more than 10 items out there.

Anywho, I found a company in Grand Rapids, MI that was selling new awnings with hardware for $350 (21'). I was like, thats it. But they only had a Blue one on auction. So I emailed them and they said to call in sometime and see what they had. I did, and they supposedly had "one more" left in stock in the red. So I nabbed it up. after the 21' awning rail, and riding cradle, and $80 shipping, my total was about $480.

The red (marroon) on the awning doesnt match my red exactly, but its good enough. I wish I would have got a black to grey one now. But its all good. It works great I love it. Check my website for the company info, cause I havn't seen them on ebay in a while. Or do a search for Great Lakes Awning in Wyoming, MI (outside Grand Rapids).
