Painting bus

what is the best cleaner to clean the bus with, after I sand and jut before I paint? Got up on scaffolding and hit the bus with a sander just to check it out. Man does the ols paint come off real easy. So I figure I will have to wipe it down real good with thinner or something. How long do I let it dry before I paint also? Using the bus white paint for the roof.

I'm also getting ready to paint my bus, so have an interest in this thread. I've never used lacquer thinner, but currently have acetone and mineral spirits handy. The acetone really evaporates too quickly, and mineral spirits take a long time as far as I can tell, at least if I have a puddle of it in a cup to clean brushes. I do like the smell of it though as compared to acetone it seems much less toxic. So where does laquer thinner fall in relation to these two in terms of evaporation and toxicity?

Re: Painting bus

For right now I am painting the top of the bus with white roll on paint. Its rustoleum paint that alot of peeps have used on the tops of theirs. $50 bucks a gallon, have 2 so I should have plenty.

My roof took 2 gallons paint, which was thinned with 2 pints of acetone, and had about 4 cups of insulating microbeads mixed in. My bus is a 3/4 size bus (8 windows), so hopefully that will give you a frame of reference.

Re: Painting bus

Mineral Spirits cleans pretty much everything off of paint (wax, etc). I'm using mineral spirits and a Deglosser. The Deglosser (KleenStrip brand) is cleaning the dead oxidation off the paint and leaving it shiny. So that is what I am using on the surfaces that I am not painting... so much for Deglossing... but the paint that I sponged on top of the "cleaned" original paint is sticking quite well. Since I m using an oil based paint (Ace Hardware's Rust Stop) I am cleaning with mineral spirits before painting over it.

I thinned it because the Hytech insulating microbeads I used were thickening it, plus it just spreads easier and spreads further if you thin it. I wanted to do two thin coats rather than one thick coat so as to get even coverage of the insulation stuff. Like Smitty said, if you use a sprayer, you often have to thin it to get a good spray pattern. I will be spraying the rest of the bus, so will continue to thin with acetone. The Rustoleum (gloss white oil-based enamel) paint I'm using recommends thinning with acetone on the label. There is no mention of mineral spirits as an alternative, although it seems to me that people do use mineral spirits for thinning oil based paint, and the mineral spirits label says it can be used for that purpose.

Smitty, the acetone evaporates faster than any other substance I've encountered. It evaporates almost faster than you can apply it. The smell is like chemical death. It tells you on the label it will give you cancer. I try to only use it with a fan blowing the fumes away from me, but this of course makes it evaporate that much faster. I find it very effective, in combination with 000 steel wool in removing sticker residue. I'm pretty sure it's a more powerful solvent than Mineral Spirits. I think I will experiment with the laquer thinner at some point as possibly a good alternative to acetone for certain jobs, like refinishing antique furniture when you don't want to completely strip it.

Yeah, it's best to throw the instructions away before you start. Don't want no second guessing.

It's a "guy thing" Doc...you wouldn't understand. We don't read instructions or ask for directions

Ah yes... the old "I don't need directions" thing. Thanks to David, we have been thru the worst part of every town we have driven in. Chicago was scary. And we have gone sightseeing in the worst parts of Atlanta many times over the years. It's part of the reason that I would like one of those GPS thingys. I can only do so much with a state map and the use of my computer/internet... which would be at home. When we go someplace, I am the "navigator". That way, at least I know where we are going.
