I am not bidding on this one. Wrong coast.

As far as the speed is concerned, I know that Phantoms go faster on suburban routes. There might be a chance to get approval from Gillig to cancel the limiter and/or unlock a 6th gear if applicable. I am certainly going to try that route if I ever find my bus.

Even if the limiter cannot be removed, 65 mph is enough for me. Dropping the cruise rpm would be nice though. That could be done either by a 6th gear unlock or a different rear ratio. If Gillig/Allison are non-responsive to my request for a 6th gear, I am going to drop a different carrier in the rear axle. Most likely with differential locker (a Rockwell/Meritor option) while we are at it.

If the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is in the transmission and nothing measures the wheel speed, then changing the rear ratio would automatically increase the top speed with the limiter in place.

Trust your gut. Your mind will talk you in and out of it. If you can envision making it happen, and feeln like it's the right thing, go for it! If you have cold feet, don't.

I say this due to owning 2 skoolies, a 76 Eldorado, and an 86 Vandura that all caused me the same hesitation. I went for it, and am not sorry! I AM sorry however about the "skoolie that got away" ...I almost bought it, a 68 dog nose RV, but let it go, and now wish I had bought it!

LIFE IS SHORT. What could go wrong??

This is info for those who are thinking regearing a rear engine bus.

I bought a used set of gears for the Rockwell axle in my Ford chassis. The gears cost me $320. It was standard semi truck axle.

An axle that has the pinion gear pointing at the rear of the bus has a MUCH HIGHER cost on gears. Make sure when buying gears that you are getting the correct parts.
