Rear door lock

I think I have what I think is the perfect rear door lock. I have the parts and I know it will work... Key on the outside plus a lock on the inside.. I have not got installed yet but it will work.... I don't know how to post pics on this site. But I can email some one pics. of how it will look and work.

I'm all eyes , show us what ya got! I'd definitely like to see a way to do this. I have looked into various dead-bolt configurations, but have yet to come up with something that will work .

I'm open to suggestions!

My Back Door Lock

Okay, this is the real one, not the Pepsi bottle one.

It doesn't lock from the inside, yet, but I'm going to do essentially the same thing on the inside with the inside door handle.

Well, I can't get the image to show, but the link takes you there.

Very Nice!

Damn! That's really a good idea! I wish I had seen it a couple of days ago. I'll have to do that to my bus. I guess I can just put a bolt in the hole I drilled for the eye-bolt. That's an excellent idea. It looks very good.

How is lockplate attached on the inside? Sheet metal screws? Or are those bolts? What did you use for the black gasket/offset material under the lock?

Excellent idea.

The lock is a dead bolt for a garage door. The screws are sheet metal screws. And the spacer I made out of 1/4 inch plastic. If I can help in any way let me know.

Can you spell it all out for me a little more. Where did you get your lock? What is the brand/type. Did it come with the sheet metal screws? If not what size do I need? Where did you get the plastic spacer? And then what?? Sorry for all the questions I am on a seriously low learning curve. All of this is new but I am so excited to get started. My Dad says I can use his shop and tools but I first need to get a lock on the bus to secure stuff when I am not using them. He also thinks I am incapable of learning because I have never done any of this before and you know I'm a girl. What he doesn't know is that I have all of you to help and I will prove him wrong. So not only am I on a mission to create a camper out of my new 1990 International Bus, but hopefully I will prove to my dad that my gender won't define my ability to do "mans" work.

locked...er...lost the key though..

I just installed a sliding gate latch for my bus-master lock keeps it closed. Works fine for me as someone was messing with the backdoor last night. Just in time, no?

Anyway, I still have this rv lock set up that will eventually be the real door lock. Seems to be just the right thickness for the rear entrance but I've nothing to cut with so its on the back burner for now.

Lea's Thomas-built modification to the Kirbystud deadbolt

I copied Lea's Thomas-built modification to the Kirbystud garage door deadbolt lock on the back door. My back door had some internal metal that prevented me from mounting the lock as high as it really needed to be, but it works okay. It definitely stops the door's bolt from traveling, but repeated slamming of the handle might overwhelm it. Of course, anyone who wanted in that badly would probably just smash the lower window out. Maybe I should put expanded metal over the lower window...or all the windows...maybe I should have bought a prison bus!

It looks formidable from the outside, what with the padlock and the deadbolt cylinder in view.

...except for all that glass!

The whole fitting procedure is here http://www.skoolie.net/gallery2/Kirb...ltModification

Could either you or Lea please post a picture of the lock actually engaged. I am guessing you both notched the bolt on the bus door, but I don't see a picture that either of you have done so.

Oops, looks like what your lock does is prevent the bolt on the door from moving out.

You got it.

Yep, that's what it does. But your notion of the bolt engaging the door's bolt is interesting....

What if the deadbolt was mounted directly under the door lock assembly and engaged the bolt there? Hmmmmmm..... That's an idea. You'd have to do some major cutting on the door lock assembly and bolt, but you might be able to do it with a drill and some files or a sabersaw if you took teh assembly off of the door itself.

That would be a VERY strong lock.
