ga of the steel framework will mostly depend on the spacing of the stringers, etc.
you will probably get lots of answers to this question...

even wood can be used if you make up the brackets.

I have another question regarding a rooftop deck -- also for Ragbrai bus conversion. I am trying to determine the best way to fasten the rooftop deck framing to the roof (or sides) of the bus. I am concerned about maintaining the integrity of the "shell' and not creating a problem with moisture getting. I've included some pictures of other conversions with rooftop deck/racks.
