Screw size for framing

I don't want to send a screw through the outside of my bus when installing beams; what is an appropriate length for a 2x2 piece of wood to secure it to the bus wall?

Are you going to be drilling through the existing internal wall?

My plan is to use 2x1 for furring strips. Predrill and counter sink the heads and use 1.5" self tappers into the ribs. Then use 3/4-1" bigger screws than the material I screw to the strips.

If you predrill your studs and then drill through with a small pilot bit when plumb etc, you'll find it easier than pushing a self-tapping screw every time. They really get hot trying to drill with and take a lot of effort. Just be a tad smaller than your actual screw that does the anchoring. The siding itself isn't all that thick and easy to drill but if you hit the inside partition then they take time to drill as will the chair rail at the bottom of the wall.
With 2x2 you are looking at 3" screws. If your pilot hole is small enough, then drywall screws grab good but I don't know about longevity. Should be fine I think. Any screw make that is at least a #8 should hold well.

Thanks. That sounds better than my plan.

To make it easier have two drills set up. One with the pilot bit and the next with the driver head in it. Saves a lot of bit changes and time.

That's always my plan John. Ever since home Depot almost gives away cordless drills, I have a few. Lol
