I would just use regular drives with RAID 5 so that if one breaks its no big deal. Then just mount the enclosure on rubber feet. Make sure to put it as close to middle of the bus as possible. I think that is where the least vibration is.

Are you going to put them inside a computer or use an external enclosure?

I've always had a computer running in my bus and have never had a problem.

I agree with Steve. I have a 160 gig hard drive in an IDE t USB 2.0 case that I hauled arond for school as it was cheaper than the 512 flash drives at the time and obviously had more capacity (though it was less convenient). I never had any trouble with that thing flopping around in my solid axle swapped yota, being exposed to well below zero temps, etc. It performed better than the computer I hooked it to in my apartment....

For the record, it was a Western Digital HDD, but I'm not sure how much of a difference brand makes. My point is that I think that it would be fine if you were to follow Steve's instructions. I don't think you'll have any problems and even if you do I'm sure it will be archieval in nature anyway so you'll have another copy of the data elsewhere.

The only other option I see is backing everything up on tape when stopped, or buying $$$ worth of flash drives

A lot of people have PCs in theirs buses and I have never heard of a failure. I read several bus boards and this topic comes up a lot. Just keep a backup as everybody always should and you will be fine.

I have maintained desktop PCs on Navy ships for years. Some of them in spaces one deck from a 5" gun. No unusual failures.

Worked on a ship that hit a mine in the Persian Gulf. No unusual number of failures.

They ship hard drives by UPS. Think your bus rides rougher than that?

Normal back up methods should work fine.

Good luck!

but the drives are not running when they are being shipped UPS, I think that is what his big deal was they would be running while driving around.

Last post on this subject. The ship hit a mine that cracked the trunions on the gun. It did not hurt the drive. We launch planes, and land planes on carriers with PCs running one deck away.

I am not arguing about what I know to be fact. Do what you like.

I would only buffer where the drive/computer mounts. If you were to put packaging material around it you will have a major heat problem and burn up the bearings in the drives.

Also keep in mind if you buy the latest and greatest capacity drive there will be more platters and spindles inside of it to scratch or wear out. I would buy several average cap. drives instead of a couple monster drives for this application.

I had a 6-gig WD drive in a Pentium 90 in my trunk for playing MP3 in the pre-iPod days. 30K miles with no failures and this is with cold starts on 10 degree days and heat soaks well over 120 in the summer.

Jake.
