Re: SO Bummed out! Bus is dead.....

Only -40 F today... Yippee, makes moving a little easier. I can spit on the ground and then bend over and pick it up. I grew up in Vancouver and am not used to this saskatchewan weather. I have my manuals and will have a look tonight to see if there is any re and re info. Now to load the truck with all my furniture.....

Re: SO Bummed out! Bus is dead.....

Vanguy, I have no doubt that you could R&R that transmission yourself, considering the mechanical experience you have. Some systems on a bus are very different than those on a car or a pickemup, but transmissions aren't one of those. If I didn't live 300 miles away, I'd come over and help you!

If it were my bus, I'd go for a used tranny. Every vehicle on the road today is a collection of used parts, isn't it? Besides, you could buy 5 used transmissions before you spent the money that a rebuild would cost. Of course, a rebuilt one is the "right" way to go, but harsh economic realities sometimes force compromises. That $3500 quote for a rebuild sounds about right to me. I drive garbage trucks for a living, and they all have Allison automatics. It costs my company $5000 for a rebuilt one, but that's installed.

I know exACTly what you mean about miniature poodles who think they're 10 feet tall - I've met some of 'em!

Re: SO Bummed out! Bus is dead.....

Our Vo-Tech school (in PA) took in all kinds of work from the local areas. All they did was have the "customer" sign a waiver/release of liability, and all went well. Sad that this lawsuit-laden society has brought things to this.

Hope you can find a good solution.

Re: SO Bummed out! Bus is dead.....

Vanguy67,

Looking thru some of my old PDF files, I discovered that I have a mechanics TIPS MANUAL that covers all the MT600 transmissions. I'm not sure what site I downloaded it from, but it seems to have a lot of good info in it. Its about one meg in size, therefore I'm not sure I can loaded onto this site. But if you send me your e-mail address, I will get you a copy. I know it has info on R&R and it has some info on repair. Let me know.

If you have an Allison automatic there is a plate on the passenger's side right above the rear edge of the tranny oil pan. It will tell you the model, part #, serial# of your transmission. I know it's cold there....take a pencil (a pen won't work at -54 F) and write the info down. you'll need it if yours ever craps out.
Just checked, I didn't have a pencil but it does say AT 545 on it. I still haven't managed to look at my manuals. (busy trying to fix my leaky 350 in my work van) I will check soon though. Is the AT 545 really that much weaker than the MT 643?

Re: SO Bummed out! Bus is dead.....

The MT series of transmissions are also rated for a much higher GVWR. It's not a big deal. One look at an AT545 and you know it's a serious transmission, even if it isn't the biggest option available to you. It's not much different than the old TH-350 versus TH-400 in GM vehicles. Sure, the 400 was bigger and stronger, but it also cost more and sapped more power and certainly wasn't necessary behind a 120 horsepower 250ci inline 6. There are advantages and disadvantages to either option.
