Suggestions on bus doors

I am wanting to replace my original bus door. Looking for suggestions or pics would be nice to. And what would be an estimated cost. Thanks

My plan is to use an rv door with as much glass in it as I can find.

I HATE school bus doors.

Yes the original doors let a lot of air in and out . The bugs are really bad were I live in the summer also

Yeah here in Fl the mosquitoes don't seem to notice the school bus doors much.

Jason, this may no be completely on topic, but I decided to straighten the original bus door. It opens and closes like a vault, takes regular home door locks, and will be wind and weather tight once completed. Thread HERE.

Anderson Doors makes one for around $200. It has THREE latches and pneumatic closers.

I can't find an easily accessible picture (I'm at work) but we replaced ours with a standard RV door and widened the doorway so it would fit. (Ours already had an RV door on it, but at only 26" wide (maybe 28" - I don't remember for 100%) we decided it was too narrow by far.

I think it ran about $4-500 - door and screen combo with deadbolt. And big window for easy viewing when turning!! (The first time I drove Wanda, that old door was one with a frosted window - WanderingJuggler had to be my right eye!!)

I’ve seen others do similar with good results. Seen some where they welded the door sections together to make it one solid door and welded on a plate for the lock mounting area. Lots of possibilities if you have some fabrication skills.

If you can weld (or know a welder) it is not that difficult to fab a door. Especially for a square, flat opening.



Mine was complicated by the very slight curve on the back edge but straight front edge.



Had an RV window made to fit top and installed a "curb viewer" down low from a boat. It uses a standard RV door latch/lock w/deadbolt.

In May I am having an RV door installed on my shuttle bus. My current door opening is 36 inches for door/40 inches including frame. So It would fit a standard house door. My contractor, Jeff Flake, at Vanlife Conversions, says RV doors have glass windows that are better suited to travel. I can let you know how it turns out if you are interested.

The door in my bus is nice and wide unlike any RV I've seen. We want to maintain that size and the school bus look. Our door is aluminum so I will bring it to a fabrication shop and have them weld both sides together. Welded together it will be about 2" smaller then the door jam so they will weld on 1"x2" aluminum stock. That will also give me a space to mount a handle. I also plan on covering over the 2 bottom windows.

Ok - doors made solid & have plan for weatherizing - need suggestions on a passage latch so we can just close the door & have a lever/knob to open from inside & outside - when not locked - or may include lock..
