sunken tub/shower
Okay I am in beginning stages of the bathroom install this winter
I am fine with showers, mama wants to be able to soak so I think I have come up with a solution
follow me here
1)get a deep tub and sink it into floor about 8 inches for head height when showering
Number 2 is what I plan to do
2)Fab a tub out of say 11 ga steel (easy to shear and weld) with a perimeter frame of 1 x1 angle and make it have a 1-1/2 lip all the way around so it can be set onto a surround with a lot of it thru the floor
the bottom shower section would be say 27 x 27 with a drain in the floor (have not measured frame rail to body yet) and 36 inches deep, with 3 steps 8 in x 8 in.....so the tub would be 27 wide x 51 long and 36 inches deep at lowest section
This would allow me to take showers and Lisa can sit on the 2nd step and soak...see... everyones happy
now steel would be ugly and not comfy especially on bottom
I was thinking maybe the smaller smooth river type rocks on flat surfaces and ??? on the walls
how would I attach to the steel walls?
concrete board "bolted" thru the steel and rely on mortar to seal like in a house? including a rubber liner under?
I have lots of Ideas, they just seem like a train wreck waiting to happen

Re: sunken tub/shower
Why not make it stylish and match your interests? See what you can locate for a good sized wine barrel, then just add a curtain, drain and steps.

Re: sunken tub/shower
that's what we wanted to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....is it actually big enough to have steps "down into it"?
we looked at one and a step to sit on is very doable steps up is fine...the getting into it has us confused

Re: sunken tub/shower
I know that wine barrels can be found in quite a few sizes, some are WAY too small for a tub..and some way too big for a bus. I would guess the best entry method would depend on size but a removable ladder (like a above ground pool thing, but smaller) or a seat inside that flips up to become a couple of steps...
Maybe you can find a good sized whiskey barrel if wine barrels don't fit.... I have faith that you can make it happen!!

Re: sunken tub/shower
it might take a while to empty the wine barrel before I can use it
I guess seal it inside and out with a flexible poly or some thing so it doesn't dry out and leak...I'm liking this more now

Re: sunken tub/shower
I would say seal inside with garage floor type epoxy without the grit... wouldn't want road rash from a bath...lol
Now that your creative juices are flowing add some wine and figure out how to make frame and eliminate the steps issue by installing a door:

Re: sunken tub/shower
I would skip the cement board bolted through the steel. Completely unnecessary. In the contractor world, we don't even use the stuff any more. Its a older, less advanced way of doing things.
I would simply ruff up the surface, mix the stones in some epoxy mix, pour the stones in the tub, form to your desired shape, then seal by pouring enough epoxy around them to fill the voids.
Also if money permits, I would make the tub out of some 14 ga stainless steel. It tig welds together so flawlessly, and would never rust. It would take around two 4x8 sheets to do depending on how big your making it.
If you were doing hot water heating, you could wrap heat lines around the tub, then insulate with a few inches of Styrofoam. Then you could set the thermostat, and soak for hours without it ever cooling off. This is something I do as a contractor for people who love soaking. It makes a cheap steel tub feel like a $1500 unit.
I look forward to seeing pics of the build.

Re: sunken tub/shower
SS would be nice(no rust), I will have to price it and see how bad it is

Re: sunken tub/shower
Why not use a Rubbermaid water trough? Much less hassle. Not as fancy but it would work and you could put it outside so she could have a bath in nature if she wanted.

Re: sunken tub/shower
It's what I was going to do. I think tractor supply has one that is cheaper than the Rubbermaid.

Re: sunken tub/shower
Where in the floor are you all thinking of installing a sunken bathtub?
Keep in mind the floor supports are running side to side, every foot. That means for a 6 foot tub, you would have to cut at least 4 of them. Just with one cut the floor starts to feel spongy. Some restructuring would definitely be needed.
I have some good idea's on how to go about this. Ask if interested.
