title help

Well I have a new face in the yard it's a 1941 GMC school bus that has been used as a home out on the Taos masa for 45 years,
The last time it ran under its own power was 1969 (woodstock)
Well it running and stoping and is getting back in shape, but before I go Further ( pun intended ) I need to go about gitting a title, any body have any ideas ? There got to be an easier way on something this old.

Ask the property owner of the property on which the bus has been parked to do a private party lien sale on the bus. That will clean up the title which the property owner can then transfer to you thus allowing you to register the bus in your name. The lien sale simply establishes (on the part of the state) that there are no other interested parties. It is the mechanism by which apartment house owners and others get rid of abandoned vehicles left behind by dead beat tenants. It is a simple and well understood process all over the country. Jack

Good to know!

OlTrunt- how long do the vehicles need to be abandoned before that can happen?

Although it's a common process everywhere, the specifics vary a bit state to state. I'm a landlord here in CT and did something like this recently re: a deadbeat renter. There wasn't a specific "age" requirement but it was a three-step process that involved a few notification/waiting periods. Not hard, but not a single form at least in my case. Check with your local DMV. They'll know.

several problems the person I got it from was leaving the area so cant get a hold of them and they were young and just wanted the money and go, second in this state you have to publish it in all the papers and have posters up for several months then have a public auction.

register it through vermont. Don't need anything but a bill of sale and you can get a transferable registration in your name that you can take to your local dmv to get plates. You don't have to be a VT resident and it can all be done in he mail.

If you are referring to Vermont registration, just go to their website. Everything is on there and you can print it all off and mail it in and they will mail you plates and a registration.

I don't know if it will help but in Indiana and Texas you file paperwork of an abandoned vehicle with the local judge, place an ad in the local newspaper for two or three weeks, then reproach the judge with the results (usually none) and have the judge issue an abandonment judgment to reclaim title. Then you use that to go to the DMV and get a clean title. I did that in Indiana with a '48 Plymouth I turned into a hot-rod, and a Ford 5 ton truck in Texas.

Hope this helps!

New Jersey is similar...which didn't help when I missed my court date
