You can Use cleaning vinegar to clean galvanized metal and then a good thick paint will last. I like oil based rust oleum.
I have been working with galvanized sheetmetal ductwork for quite awhile and anytime the exposed stuff needs to be painted it gets wiped down with vinegar.
Commercial paint supply stores also sell gun grade self etching paint in 5-gallon buckets.
Vinegar does wanders on rust also. Safer and just as effective as acid or anything like it. Just takes more soaking time.
EastCoastCB - I'm assuming those are the pieces that you're putting on the roof hatches?
Would this product work just as Ospho and essentially be ready for paint? I have a 3'x4' piece of steel from Home Depot ($20) and was going to spray it before putting it on.

Nice pics, we saw similar results today. I was amazed how a lot of areas turned to bare steel as I was brushing it on.
Sidenote: is that your kennel?
No its on a buddy's property where I'm keeping my big bus at the moment. I store all the supplies and tools that used to be in the bus in the now-vacant kennel. The guy bought the place off his folks who are/were the creepy weird kind of animal hoarders. At one time there were HUNDREDS of dogs in there. Shaun, my buddy, is happy to only have one dog and it lives in his house.

What gauge did you get for $20?
Self etching primer would be good for pristine new metal. For rusty metal, I prefer Ospho.
