Re: ultimate DT466 info source, forum, etc

from everything i've read, the dt466 rocks! makes lots of power, lasts forever, is cheap to rebuild. but i dont think it can hold a candle to the cummins 5.9 in fuel economy.

i drove tons of miles with the dt360, a slightly smaller version of the dt466, and was very happy with it. I overloaded the bus by several tons and drove over 5K miles on a road trip. I figure the engine ran full throttle for at least 100 hours during that trip and she never missed a beat! DT motors are solid and reliable.

if you had an overdrive gear, and a really conservative rear end, like a 4:10, fuel economy might not be that bad.

nothing seems to have the power and economy of the bluebird tc2000's with mt643 and 5.9 cummins

Re: ultimate DT466 info source, forum, etc

fo me the ultimate dt466 would be a 250 hp electronic control, with a 7 or 9 speed manual trans and highway gears, either low axle ratio and overdrive trans gearing or hi axle gears and low trans gears so that you could get rolling with a heavy load or on a steep grade without tearing up the clutch and still be able to idle down the road at the bottom of the torque band at 60 or 70 mph, and giving you 85 or 90 mph at peak power. put a good set of low profile radial tires designed for fuel mileage under the bus and then lower it close to thegound to minimize air turbulence under the bus, install monster smooth bottom storage basements on both sides and then run a flexable skirtdown the side between the boxes and the pavement.
when raising the roof I would incorporate an aero fairing into the leading edge above the windshield and try to gain more mpg
run synthetic lubes to minimize parasitic power losses due to friction

you can easily turn the fuel screw and really get more hp out of the enigne for free with very little effort involved on your part. i did it to my dt360 and loved it! even get better fuel economy with the higher hp version. that was measured on a 5k mile road trip.

There is tons of info on the DT466 online. Power potential is insane! The guy that owns Hypermax (http://www.goypermax.com) is one of the original engineers of the DT466, retired from IH. He was talking on another forum, that for $10k you can get 1000hp, or pretty dern close. Of course, not many Allisons can handle that, let alone a manual. That package is all external, just thicker headgasket to lower the compression a smidge. They have a full shop dedicated to tractor pulling mainly with the basic 466 block, and see 2500+hp with those.
There's always my freebie fuel rate site: http://www.freewebs.com/nevrenufhp
Fuel screw up thru 92, then the 93-97ish uses a fuel plate like on a 94-98 Dodge Cummins. With the electronic version, you cant really add much power due to the computer, but someone can be a guinea pig & test injectors & other tricks.
I'm not an "expert" like Hypermax, but the 466 is my favorite engine, and my freebie site started from that.

All is not lost for you guys with the DT360 & 408, the Ford 6.6 & 7.8, these fuel mods apply to you too. You just cant be squeezing that much power out. Limit the 6.6 & 7.8 to just the fuel screw adjustment, beause that's all the fuel they can burn without burning up themselves. The DT's can take what you throw at em.

Ok, here's probably more links than most of you will care for, but here ya go. Pertaining mostly to the 466. At least it'll be a little entertaining:
