I tried going slower (60mph) on a trip last summer, but my bus did not do very well going up hills at that speed. It would slow down tremendously. I think the "sweet spot" is pedal to the metal which is a little over 70mph.

I get about 8 mph, diesel short bus. My tank only holds about 20 gallons so I start getting nervous if I've been driving a couple hours and don't see a gas station. I don't know if I could ever drive across North Dakota or somewhere like that. So some people add extra gas tanks or replace their gas tanks with bigger ones?

5.9 cummins turbo. allisonautomatic... at 60.... 65-70mph it gets 6.5 7mpg in the hills of missouri

My 1988 Crown transit had 78 passenger capacity. It has a Detroit Diesel 6-71 turbo with Allison auto and a 112 gallon fuel tank. It got almost 12 mpg bringing it from San Diego to San Francisco Bay Area. About 500 miles.

1977 Chevy C/60, 4plus 350 gasser. We got around 6 on a 200 mile trip on mostly level ground.
On another note, my 98' 5.9l Grand Cherokee gets around 11 mpg average on 92 octane. 6 doesn't seem too bad for an 11,000lb vehicle when my SUV gets less than twice that and only weighs 4,200lbs.

In my 1999 Thomas RE 72 pass bus. I averaged 10.5 in my 1800 mile round trip to Indiana. I'm very happy with these numbers.

My 1951 IHC / Wayne gets 8/10 mpg depending on conditions. SD240 gas. 4sp 6.16 gears. Soon I will have 5.70 gears and I will report. I once had one of those bug deflectors I put on a 78 Impala. It improved my highway milage by 3mpg. And it kept my windshield clean. I'm going to put one on my bus and test the results. They send the airstream over the top instead of slamming into the windshield. An air dam on the front bumper may work as well. It would have to be adjustable but keeping air out from under the vehicle is important. Lots of drag under a bus.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and to bus conversion. I am currently looking at buying a really clean 1998 Thomas short bus, 18 seater at 9,500lbs weight. It has a 6.5 Chevy turbo Diesel engine, and a 35 gallon fuel tank. With those numbers, what do you think would be reasonable numbers to expect for mpg? Thanks much!

If the miles are low, that could be a great buy. Lots of people (myself included) have negative thoughts on that engine though. Id guess 13-15

My 1992 TC2000 5.9 cummins, Allison automatic gets around 9 mpg.
That is wide open running 62mph.
Runs great but it is SLOW!

I sold a motorhome to a guy once. He asked me about fuel economy. I replied, "Why would you even ask that question?" When I'm out camping I'm committed to the RV lifestyle... Everything else is secondary. If I were concerned about fuel economy then I'd be researching how to convert a Prius into a camper!

Our house gets 11.5 running up and down 3200ft to 7500ft.
Will be doing some flatland soon, will post MPG.

On our 9,000 mile trip this summer, the trip average in my 1999 Thomas bus with 3126b CAT (electronic engine) and 6-speed Allison MD3060 (6th gear enabled), cruising at 65 with foot buried most of the trip, weighing in at about 24,500 lbs, we averaged 8.2 mpg. Best was 9.3 going SE through Yellowstone on 287, worst was on PCH (route 1) at about 6.5 (constant hills and stop-and-go letting people pass).
Edit: 4.62 rear gears turning ~2,100 rpm at 65.
