1955 Chevy Short Bus

I'm renovating a 1955 Chevy Short Bus into a mobile food vehicle in the Dallas-Ft Worth Metroplex. I plan on only using the body and frame. There is no engine or motor, but if you have any interest in any parts underneath, I will be selling them.

Two questions...
#1 if no engine how is it "mobile"? How are you going to move it.

#2 have you run your plans by your local HD inspector? I understood that the Dallas -Ft Worth food rules were a pita.

Re: 1955 Chevy Short Bus

I had it shipped down to San Antonio. It's being redone by Cruising Kitchens (www.cruising kitchens.com). They are very well versed in the codes in DFW and will get the bus ready to go. Check out their website and see the work they do...pretty impressive.

Re: 1955 Chevy Short Bus

We did our little cart ourselves (it was licensed as a mobile kitchen while we were in TX). It's a little on the "plain" side.

Nice thing is when we decide to do something else, we can remodel it (yet again) to suit our new whatever. I've been reading Roadfood (Pro section) for a long time now and I do not like the direction Food Vending seems to be heading. So I'm researching other possibilities. Food Vending is getting to be an expensive PITA.

Yeah it's not cheap to get going in the mobile food vehicle market these days but that aside it's huge and it's great for cities, etc. There are mobile food parks springing up around DfW. It's an exciting time to be in this business.

Re: 1955 Chevy Short Bus

So far we have been lucky. We full-time and there are campgrounds that do not allow vehicles with any advertising on them at all (I have heard of RV folks with painted on signage being asked to leave... magnetic signs to be removed while in the campground). So far, we have managed to get into campgrounds with few problems. The amount of space we take up has been the problem. In TX, we had to park the cart in the "overflow" lot but we changed to a mobile home/RV park and solved that problem (plus cut our site/utility cost by a good chunk). Currently, in NM, it's been squeezing into a site. But even if we change what we sell (no more food), we will still keep the trailer. Just one of the many considerations involved with self-employed full-timing.

The amount of work involved with food vending and David's heart meds are not a good combo. I would like to keep David around as long as possible.
