1993 Ward 72 passenger

Well unfortunately our project is just not moving forward and we don't have the time so we have decided to get out. Maybe someday we'll try again.

1993 Ward/International 72 passenger
DT360 engine, auto trans.
Air ride suspension
Body and floor are very solid, originally a southern bus.
All seats have been removed (we all know how much that sucks). Also included are 3 bench seats from a Ford E350, all the seat belts, and about 35 sheets of OSB subfloor and sheeting. Runs good, tires fair, drives good.

Follow the link below for more pics, including some of the underside.

How many miles? Air brakes or hydraulic? Any known issues? Very interested.

Air brakes, somewhere around 150,000 miles I can't remember exactly. No known issues.

How does it drive and handle on the road/highway? Do you have the records for the engine/tranny maintenance? Have you have the engine/tranny/drivetrain inspected or had any work done on them? Thanks.

Re: 1993 Ward 72 passenger

Drives fine on the highway, drove it home from n.w. Of Detroit 4 hours to home east of Cleveland. Previous owner did not provide any records, and we haven't done anything to it. We intended to do an oil change after we got it home but we have so little spare time to work on it we never even did that. Since we brought it home late last fall we have only driven it a few times to move it from one place it was being stored to another.

Re: 1993 Ward 72 passenger

How about rust? What condition are the body panels, floor, frame, etc in? Being from the north I assume it's seen lots of salt in the winter. This is exactly the type I'm looking for, it's just hard to inspect it from 1000 miles away. Can you post more pics of the engine, interior, underside, etc? Thanks.

Exactly what he said. How was the rust on the body and undercarriage and how was the sub floor when you took the seats out? And do you still have the seats?

Re: 1993 Ward 72 passenger

This bus originally came from down south, Alabama I think, and did not see a lot of salt. We were actually quite shocked how solid the body is. No major rot anywhere, and the floor is in great shape.

However yesterday I met a guy to look at it and it wouldn't crank. Not even a click from the starter. Never had a starting problem before, even after sitting for a couple of months. Gotta be something simple so I am starting to check it out today.

Yup, it was simple. Had to wiggle the shifter, it wasn't catching the neutral safety switch.

The original seats have all been removed, but we did keep 4, 2 left, 2 right, and a bunch of cushions.

You may also want to mention that it has an air ride rear axle. Call any International truck dealer with the VIN # and they can tell you what engine, transmission and axle ratio it has. If I'm correct, that bus is worth way more then what your asking. I've got two buses already, otherwise I'd overnight you a down payment until I could get up there.

Also, these early air ride buses came from Kentucky. Even after 10 years, they were in such great shape that other school districts in Alabama and South Carolina bought them used from Kentucky and put them into service. Even as a second hand bus, they were way more dependable and cheaper to maintain then the newer electronic buses coming off the assembly line, thus the reason for the high demand by the other school districts. Kentucky was the first state to go with an all air ride school bus fleet in there larger buses.

Looked at the pics and it does look like it's in decent shape for its age. The price is excellent if everything is good to go mechanically. I would jump on it in a heartbeat but the old lady would kill me since we have other priorities to spend the money on right now. Sucks being a responsible, mature adult sometimes

Any idea on top speed or a vin # I could use to call around. Looking for something that isnt going to be a dog on the highway towing an enclosed trailer. Nothing break neck speed but I don't want to stuck at 55 either.

A big bus like that with a dt360 & towing a trailer, well 55 mph might be a pretty good speed.

Re: 1993 Ward 72 passenger

We had it up to 65mph indicated, which seems to be where it is governed. I did do some checking some months ago and found out that it has shorter tires than it should by one size. I did the math and if it had the taller tires the speedo would be correct. I had planned on going to the place in Canton Ohio that sells parts, he sells very good condition used tires on wheels for $100, and when I spoke to him he said he usually has enough to do a set of six. If one of the two locals that is looking at it doesn't buy it this weekend I will post up the VIN. I can also offer to deliver, or meet part way, up to about 400 miles for cost of expenses, as long as you help me get the bike out of the back for the return trip.
