2 crowns on ebay

I think these are sooooo cool but I fear the Detroit diesel and I don't think they will work for what I want them to do (full-time live aboard). Unless someone convinces me other wise before the end of the auction.

I'm curious as to why you don't think the Detroit Diesels in them will work for full-timing.

I've not read every thread on this site, but what I have read tells me that they have excellent engines, and the parts are cheap and easy to find. When properly maintained, they can easily run 500k to 1m miles.

I'll fall out of my chair if these two busses sell for less than 10K, but if I had that kind of money, I'd be all over them.

DD aren't cheap. If that engine dies on ya, it can cost 10-20 large to rebuild. But when they're good, they're GOOD. I've heard they have a thirst for oil and fuel.
I'd imagine these will sell for 4500-5500. But yeah 10k is probably more like it.
Thing is, I'm not sure they sell so high if Mokibrahbrant isn't bidding.

LOL, true. He does tend to drive the price up.

I'm sure I read a thread very recently about Crown engines that were cheap to work on. Do they put Cummins 8.3 in any of them?

Far as I know DD aren't ever cheap. I don't know about the 8.3's but they did put 855's in Crowns!

The crown body is made for moving on the highway not for modding out into an RV. If it were to be a weekender absolutely. Just the way the body is constructed makes it very difficult to deal with, how do you add tanks to it. That panel in the middle of the floor is a night mare to design space around. DD engines are ridiculously expensive to repair and hard to find a mechanic who knows their way around one. If that engine gives up the ghost you will be looking at least a $10-13k bill and be homeless for a month.

Yes, the way a crown is made = more $$ to convert.

And way more hassle.

Then comes trying to find parts that are not made anymore ect.

Not worth it in my opinion. Better off with a clean rear engine BlueBird, with a Cummins 8.3 and a MD3060.

Wanted to do a crown but they wind up being very expensive. The more I look at them the more I think I rather go with a 40' with boxes underneath. However if you are building a weekend machine or thinking more of a tent on wheels the crowns are awesome. Its when you start wanting a bathroom and or shower that things start getting very complicated.

Oh man, like many others, I Love Those CROWNS! but it would not be a rational choice for me to build out. the spacing issues underneath are for sure a problem and if its a DD 6 or 8v71 they are users and leakers. Definitely a major cost to repair if needed and that's if you can find an old mechanic that actually knows how to make one hum. So I guess I'm just agreeing with the other guys.

Nothing cheap about owning a 2 stroke. Excellent engines and they have quite a following. A rebuild would be upwards of $20k. Guys that know them and can fix them are getting far and few between.

Most of us are here for efficient living / camping structures.

Only a few are trying to carry a level of prestige, trying to show off their money, and have something they think most of us want.

Only way I would own a Crown is if it was given to me. Then I would sell it to some sucker that thinks he wants it.
