Auction over in 13 min! what ya think?
https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?f...268&acctid=898
should i go for it? has dt466, probably at545 im assuming
not doing towing or crazy mountain drives, just regular travelling, mostly on roads, some dirt here and there
just lost out on another bus 5 mins ago, so didnt have proper time to look into this one, but that price....
edit - runs and drives, they said they see no reason it wouldnt drive off the lot 500 miles +

Didnt look at link but at545 w/ dt466 is - from what ive read - not too common since engine torque is too high for allisons comfort.

Id ask them if air pressure warning light is on, air brakes work via springs engaging the brakes w/ air pressure keeping them open. If air psi is low brakes will still function down to maybe 15 or 20 ish psi bellow that brakes are locked up.

im gonna try email, school district didnt answer. they said it was in good working order when removed from service weeks ago, and felt no reason why it wouldnt make a 500+ mile trip, so i wouldnt think it would be having low air pressure

In all honesty it could be something else entirely that i just havent encountered. If it is air pressure problem either the compresser is slow, or theres a leak.
If there is a leak it could be something as simple as a rubber hose
I read that ad and was like "ahhhhh type faster" lol
If you win it let me know i have the same system maybe can be of some help

From the listing: "This bus was in good working order when we took it out of service last month. We don't see any reason it would not travel 500+ miles."

Air psi warning beeps <60psi
Brakes work fine >20-25 psi
People selling used vehicles are sometimes shady

well i did win the auction, no replies before the auction ended, the other buses they were selling were in good shape so i had good reason to assume this one was as well. hopefully its something minor. if not, ill be doing all the research and self diagnosing i can, and i did get it for 2047 out the door, so i have a bit over a grand that was in my bus purchase budget now available for repairs, and 2 more paychecks in a week on friday, probably the day ill be picking it up

That is a steal of a price for a dt466 with those miles, just remember when you pick it up to keep an eye on the psi gauge on the top right of the cluster, if it gets too low the brakes will lock regardless of how fast youre going. A chase car would be a smart move.
On mine, which is a t444, the compressor is belt driven in the engine bay with the air tank nearby. Lines and connections are the most likely leak spots, bad compressor or tank is next, with the brake drums themselves being next on the list. You will be able to hear any leak - remember after you shut bus off the tank is supposed to empty so diagnose while running or just ignore the blow off valves on tank.
Its a simple system, just important lol [emoji482]
And congrats on beginning the skoolie life, its awesome

im still in shock, and a bit overwhelmed for the drive home, just over 500 miles, which will be done probably over 2 days, with a stop at the Ozark National Forest for a day/night, weather permitting. never driven anything bigger than 4.7 v8 dodge. well, a beefy 2500 or something chevy with a flat bed once

Its also possible that the air pressure gauge/light/warning beep itself is malfunctioning
If you're any good with dash wiring etc (i hate it, almost cursed level of bad luck with wiring projects) id consider that if you dont find an obvious leak or brake system fault

Its just like driving anything long, make your turns wide and go slow.
Youll get the hang of it no problem, most do

I can only hope. I did car stereos, alarms, remote starts, all kinds of vehicle wiring in cars for about a decade. Not as inclined with all the diagnosis, but have an understanding of automotive electrical

A buzzer can also be an emergency door with the lock in the wrong position.

If there’s a leak in the system big enough to almost keep pace with the air compressor troubleshooting it won’t be a problem. Listen, you will find it. Air leaks aren’t quiet, especially big ones. If you don’t hear a leak take the line off at the pump, if it’s compressing air it should push your thumb off the fitting. I’ve had air dryers go bad and stop pressure from building also.
