Forty foot Bus Conversion, all aluminum hull, built in 1965, fully converted and restored in 1986. Detroit Diesel, Automatic Allison Transmission, tag axle, air brakes, power steering, Air Chief drivers seat, new tires, 300 gallon diesel tank, 300 freshwater, 300 blackwater, 3 cylinder diesel generator built-in, two air conditions, four burner stove with oven, full fridge and freezer, satellite TV, sofa, two bunks, Queen bed master suit, full bath and shower, water heater, trash compactor, inverter etc etc etc. Her name is Phyllis the Whale and she can be driven with a regular license. I'm not believing the mileage on that 53 year old bus, even though you posted it twice. It may be on the odometer, but certainly not what the motor has. Need to know what engine and trans are in it and post many pics. No one can place a value on something we can see.

If it was repowered in 1986 with a 6 cylinder Detroit it is most likely a 6v92. The most common Allison in those buses would be the HT-740.

Link to pics would be helpful to see to what standard it was finished at.

You can google some of the ad from below to find it.

Looks like it's been for sale a while. And the price has been quite a bit higher. Or maybe those ads are from when they bought it? Facebook implies it's a recent purchase.

If it checks out mechanically and isn't rusted underneath, and the rear suspension is in good shape, and the mileage is correct--- That's a sweet, sweet chariot.

Hey! I got some replies this time!! Thank you, all!

I greatly appreciate the input.

We're looking for a bus for the family and we just can't do the conversion. Husband doesn't have time and I have zero skills .. although I'd be totally into that sort of challenge, I have zero tools to work with and really can't go crazy on expenses. So, as of now, we're looking at rigs already done.

I'm torn though, between this style, and the flat nose Blue Bird style with tons of windows. Feels more open ..

Thanks again, I'm excited to check it out!

That Eagle is designed to go a million miles in comfort. If interstate miles are on the agenda there's no comparison.

ive driven both.. as most here know ive logged a ton of miles on my school busses in the last couple years.. but I used to drive some friends from ohio to florida and back a couple times a year in a fully outfitted Coach. (it was a prevost).. and the ride and power of a coach is fantastic.. while my school busses arent converted (im more a bus geek than an RVer) I can say with certain that if I were to make a conversion it would either be a school bus or a fully-windowed coach... if there was one fault with that prevost it was that it was dark inside.. I am a Bright and shiny and sunny type of guy. and I find that inside a sachool bus full of windows has that modern-Loft-apartment feel when the original windows are left in..

that said windows are a hug source of heat loss and heat gain..

that is one sweet looking eagle... id definitely not be ashamed to travel the country in a rig lke that!!!

Thanks, Christopher

I totally agree .. don't like the enclosed feel of some of these.

I am completely clueless, but I've been scouring this forum for best engine, transmission, to be paired with most space ..

I also found a 38ft. Blue Bird Flat Nose for sale. All is says is Diesel 5.9L Cummins. Wants $8500

And an International with 7.3 L 466, Allison transmission. But they want 14k and it's empty.

I would love to add a rooftop deck to my dream bus and I've only seen that on these school bus types.

I know all us newbies are annoying to those of you educated on all this, but bear with us!

roof deck on a coach would make for a very tall bus and also a long way to have to climb up.. school busses arent typically as tall as coaches.. coaches have a lot more underbelly or "basement" storage typically which makes them taller..

not sure where you are looking at school bus prices but sure seems like a really high priced dealer or auction site..

There really isn't much comparison in a coach and a school bus. They're both buses. But its the same way a Cadillac and Kia are both cars but entirely different.
If you want to travel long interstate miles and the coach is mechanically good its almost a no-brainer. And the conversion work is all done. You can remodel it once you figure out what you like more.
Just my opinion.

What about this:

MC8 '74
Detroit Diesel (hasn't specified which one yet .. )
Allison Transmillion
8 cylinder Turbo 2 - stroke compression start (says this is standard in Greyhounds)
Miles unknown

Needs new hydraulic lines for steering box
Has one leak in Diesel filter
Needs one new airbag on back axle
*Says this will cost a grand, max, to fix*

Wants 12k
Converted to RV
has shower, forced air, inverter/converter
Dishwasher, washer and dryer
Says no rust
Greyhound Aluminum
Generator on board, water heater, propane and electric.

I am clueless, would appreciate any insight as far as:

Good for traveling US (miles)
Easy to get parts if ever necessary?
Expensive parts, or hard to work on?
40 FT

I don't think this forum will let me post pictures because I'm new still.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

There isn't a link, actually. He and I were talking and he mentioned he has this bus for sale, it's not posted anywhere. He wasn't totally sure he wanted to sell it, it was going to be his to live in but he has some health issues that have caused him to reconsider.

The pics look decent. He sent some to me. I'll try to post them. If I can't, what am I looking for in the pics?

Thanks!

I wouldn’t pay 24,000 for that. I can’t think of too many things that are mechanical and made in the 60s that I would pay 20k for. Could be just me but that isn’t very nice looking for anywhere near that price.

Looks like a great bus to me. The rest is based on what’s valuable to you that they already have in the bus. That’s the type of engine and tranny my mechanic told me to look for. Only thing I’d say is make sure you completely understand how air breaks work and how to fix them if something goes wrong. For me that was too much so I looked for a bus with hydraulic breaks.
