Looking for dt466 or 5.9 Cummins, 72+ passengers, running condition, minimal rust. Any offers welcome. Thanks so much!

I have seen a number of well equipped buses at auction in the DC area. Have you looked at GovDeals and PublicSurplus?
Also, I would not rule out the 8.3 cummins. The 8.3 equipped buses almost always come with either the MD3060 or MT643 transmissions.

Thanks for the advice! Yes I’ve called a few people with postings there, checking one out Friday. Haven’t found EXACTLY what I want but many acceptable options. And yes, the other engine would be fine just thought the other was more common. Still learning, thanks for your help

Opinions vary. I am of the mind that, in full size buses, the 5.9 is not the best choice. It is a great motor but not my first choice for a 20k-26k pound right. I lean strongly towards the 8.3 or the DT466/530.
I have the 8.3 and MD3060 and am very happy with it. I used as a moving truck last summer. I packed it full with my household belongings and drove it, in mid 90's temps, across 3 mountain passes. It pulled like a champ.

I totally agree. The 5.9 Cummins is a great motor but it was never intended to challenge mountain passes at max weight pulling an overloaded Suburban. In a smaller/lighter bus it will give very good service, but if you are inclined to pull steep inclines with a lot of weight...you need more cubic inches and more torque.

And an old racer once told me...
"all it takes to go fast and win races is lots of cubic dollars".

All it takes to go fast is cubic dollars, how fast do you want to go?
I have a formula for making a small fortune in racing. You start with a large one and it doesn't take long.
BTW, winning is never determined by how much you spend.

I agree. At least, not very often.
I enjoyed quite a few years of slaughtering big buck and even a couple of factory teams with my low budget, homebuilt 373cc two stroke. And that included running up a couple of classes against super tricked out 1000cc four strokes.
