Do you have any other info on that? Is it also a graveyard?

I need to scarf a driver's window and some rub rail, but can't find any graveyards nearby.

IDK how much it costs, but you can buy rub rail sections.

You guys are a wealth of information. PlfKing has pointed me in a direction that I like with MandMsalvage. I'm going to go up there and try out the buses first. I remember a thread where one of the better builds had said he tried out a few before he found the one that was just right for him. We intend to do the same.

As for the transmission preference, I am a born problem solver and am ALWAYS willing to compromise for what's best. I simply wanted to see if what I was looking for was even possible. More than a few of you have PMed me or posted in here with good links to good buses and I'm following up with each and every one. As a younger man I made the mistake of looking for a type of vehicle and jumping on the first one I saw (jokes about my divorce would fit in well here )

That being said, not only am I open to the idea of different transmissions and other options, but I am going to go DRIVE each and every one before I give anyone ANY money.

Until then, I am loving your guy's knowledge, builds, pictures and resourcefulness. I really can't wait to truly become a member of a group like y'all.

Thanks for all the responses so far!

Looking at these 2 currently (thanks Don). Anything you guys see that I should be looking out for? Heading up there the weekend after next to see them. My preference right now is for the #70 which has the DT466 while the #53 has the DT466e. I don't like electronics (which is also why I like manual transmissions, simplicity).

So, I have done a crap load of reading and intend to follow up tomorrow with the DMV but does anyone in NC know what is required to have on me to drive a bus home? I'm not a fan of paying more for a tow than I did for the vehicle.

And just to make it SOO much more fun here is a kink. I am from KY and as such have a KY DL. KY doesn't give a crap what you drive if it's not commercial. NC is, of course, a PITA on everything. Do I even need to bother with NC if my DL is from KY? I will most likely get tags for it here in NC but if need be can title and tag it in KY. I need to visit mom and dad anyway.

I did read this thread in it's entirety... twice.

You do not need to worry about your drivers license, the majority of the CDL laws do not apply to driving a private, non commercial vehicle, and since they both have hydraulic brakes, the other issue is out

Hydraulic brakes are a deal killer for most of us, but it's a personal choice.

Don
It is buddy's garage in Washington,NC and yes it is a graveyard.
From the pics chopane gas texted me and on satellite view they are pretty much packed side by side and from the few pics I have it looks more like 80's and down to vintage models.
Yeah mirrors are a definite a year model of windshield to match?
And it looks like all the rub rails are rubbing as we speak.
Chopane gas also said when you go have to pass his initial size up of you!
He is like the soup nazi on Seinfeld (? I Don't watch Seinfeld) only in parts.
You have to follow his instructions to the letter then you can roam at will.
If you piss him off its game over.
Have a price in your head because he will ask what it's worth to you.
You can remove your own stuff but if you get hurt its on you.
Good luck,
I plan on going there for mirrors, hood springs and hinges is about all I need unless he has some rims I can use.

oooohhh. maybe someone can see if they have that driver's window deflector i been looking for farn near forever??? old busses used to have this metal-framed extra glass outside the driver window.. when you had the driver window oipen you could flip it around to give you air inside the bus.. just like a wing window.. when you wanted the windows closed it folded out of the way and didnt obstruct vision.. nev er seen this on anything newer than the 70s or 80s busses.. anyone know what im talking about?

If you have something I want, I can be disgustingly polite. Thank you for the lead.

Is there a place near Mebane at the I40-I85 split? That's what I was referring to. I'll keep Buddy's info handy, but Washington's about 3 1/2 hours from me.

In regards to the brakes. I would much prefer air brakes but wouldn't let hydraulic brakes be the only thing that kept me from getting a bus that is otherwise everything I want.

Still planning on going up to check out these two. Sucks that they are closed on the weekends but I will figure out a way!

Hey Christopher...my '46 has a "wing window" that swings out. Also has a roll down driver window. No idea just when those "standard items" went away.

Planning a trip up to test both of those buses out soon. Having to dance around some work stuff but hopefully we will be bus owners soon! My kids are all excited about getting it ready to go so that we can get out and see our National Parks.

I have been in scouting all of my life.
A bus unfinished is NO reason to not get out there and tent camp or just cover yourself with the blanket in your sleeping mat.
Or a good days back packing trip where they know there coming back to the bus
Trust me.
That will make them appreciate the camper.
Sleeping on the ground with what you carry in a pack taught to young children make a school bus with the same mattress a dream because it is safe and secure from the rest of the world.
For young children some are bothered and some are not so sleeping on the ground before you build them a palace.
My children are heading to college.
The problem I made in my build is I built permanent beds/structures for my children?
Now it's time to repurpose those areas?
At least I know where every screw is?

Oh trust me, we camp and hike all the time. I just can't take the whole family anywhere because the wife requires plumbing lol! We have 4 kids, the youngest of which is only months old so he doesnt quite like camping yet but he loves sleeping in the hammock with dad. The oldest 2 would live outside if their momma let them. The 2nd to youngest isn't much of an outdoors person but she likes chilling in the tent with a fire going and seeing some of the views we hike to.

Now, you brought up something that I've been thinking about for a while. The sleeping areas in a bus. Has anyone just put up some hammock connections that make it easy to put up and take down hammocks for sleeping? All of mine are used to them and don't flip out of them anymore. Seems that it would be a whole hell of a lot easier and leaves a ton of room for other stuff.

Making my life difficult ... I am (border line was) set on a dt466 with a manual and air brakes. Would also like engine brake as well.Just seems like a rock solid drive train and stopping power.

I have not had any time to get up there to see them yet. I keep checking their inventory to see if my favorite has sold and so far she hasn't. My wife is totally on board with the idea but she wants me to wait until after my deployment to pick her up. Torn on what I'll actually do. I've been in trouble before LOL!

What is the general consensus on a GMC with a 366, 5 speed trans and a 2 speed axle?

My take on what i would what is a full frame shorty for living quarters and a matching single axle 4 window custom trailer for toys/garage (a couple of dual sports, kayaks, tools, etc ...).
