Coachwork: 97 Bluebird TC1000 5.9
The long version of the TC2000, or the medium 26' version?

That's a big bus for a 5.9. I'm in the 26' TC1000 with the 5.9 and I feel relatively underpowered. I'm guessing they put bigger injectors in the longer TC2000.

Then again this isn't a power thing as long as it gets you where you're going.

Where do you usually shop for a bus? I'm just wondering if we're looking in the same places.

Robin, I have both the 54pax and the 71pax TC2000
Both with the 5.9L
I have taken the 71pax over many of the mountain passes in CO and been pleasantly surprised at how well it's done! I'm in the right lane with the semi's, but so are most of the RV's my size. On the flats, it will do 72 in 5th. (pushing 3,2000rpm though) I have the MD3060, and pray that one day the Allison fairy will come unlock 6th for me! So far BB will not write me the letter, and no one at any of the local Allison shops are willing to break the rules....

My biggest complaint between the 2 is braking. The 71pax doesn't stop on $100.00 bill, let alone a dime!

Why not the All American? The TC was bluebird's "budget" line.

Are the AllAmericans actually a little fancier than the TC models? They're usually bigger, and probably air ride?

Where'd you get a TC2000 with a 3060 anyway? That doesn't sound like a normal match.

All depends on what the customer ordered.

I wouldn't say the All American is any fancier, just built a little heavier. Not necessarily bigger, though. You can get both the AA and the TC up to 15 windows, or 14 with a rear engine. Only real difference when it came to what was and wasn't available, if you wanted a TC with a Cummins 8.3, it had to be a rear engine. The AA, you could get it front or rear mounted.

And my All American wasn't spec'd with air ride. I wish it had been. I have a Peterbilt air leaf that I might get around to swapping in sometime years down the road, after everything else is done.

I'm always so amazed at the bus knowledge that comes out here. Interesting stuff.

When a 5.9 is used in a longer bus, like the TC2000, they rate it at a higher horsepower. Is that just larger injectors?

Larger turbo, more aggressive ECM tune on the newer electronic variants.

We have 5.9 Cummins in the 82 passenger Bluebirds I drive at work and frankly they're a little underpowered once you get 30 or so riders on board. Hills are a struggle. I wouldn't even consider doing a skoolie conversion on one unless I was ONLY going to drive it in flat areas

There's a reason why everyone on here recommends the 8.3 Cummins it's the only engine that should be in the full length buses.

Hey there now, the DT466 is a FINE engine in a skoolie.
Many of us prefer it.
Either way, I agree about the 5.9.

I found mine at a rural district here in CO. 1 of 3 busses they owned. (Bus NO. 1 She was stored inside her whole life. It was their activity bus. Only had 96k miles on it when I bought it. I was able to get all the service records, and have even spoken to and emailed with the salesman at Colorado West who originally sold it. The transportation director didn't even know what the tranny was. When I went out to see her, the first thing I did was crawl under to make sure it wasn't an AT545. When I saw the MD3060, I was sold!

Right, I forgot about the DT466. There's also the DT530 but thats kinda rare and they have some issues. I've never actually driven a bus with the DT466, the entire fleet at my company is all 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins.

I have driven a coach with the M11 Cummins, now there was some real power! Wonder if one could swap a motor like that into a skoolie

A Cat 3406 can fit. I'd imagine the m11 cummins would, too.
The 466 is a great engine for a school bus. Robust, good power, easy to maintain, easy to rebuild, easy to find parts for.
I wouldn't want a full size bus without a cummins 8.3 or a DT466 in it.

I'd still like to replace my 5.9 with an 8.3, but I'm not all that fond of the Cummins engine sound. I'm leaning toward the 466 if I've got a choice. I wouldn't turn down a 530, but I don't want a long bus.
