yeah i wouldnt touch a bus with a bad turbo... who knows if the turbo leaked oil and ran the engine terribly Low or if its actually something other than the turbo.. like the forum member that had a dropped lifter and it was thought to be a turbo issue..

It's not that hard to resist buying something that's already broken.
The '02 should be priced like the '96.

You know you're going to have to drive thousands of miles to get your perfect bus. Start looking on the west coast.

Oregon is going to start using salt during extreme winters like the one we just had so more vehicles from here may not be as clean in the future.

I made it to urban legend status!

I agree, I would be wary of any issues, and since its a FE, is probably a real pain to work on, especially if its not a turbo and troubleshooting is required.

For what its worth, the rebuild kit and new studs etc for the T444e turbo came to less than $150 and was remarkably easy to overhaul with a little patience.

I can say for a fact that changing a RE T444e turbo is an absolute nightmare and will require many smoke breaks, even if you didnt smoke before you started the job

How mechanically inclined are you?

The add said it would start and run. I'd take that to mean it didn't have turbo blades in the cylinders. It shouldn't be that hard to get a look at the turbo to make sure.

I'd say that's a $1k bus if you have to do all that work, and the seller knows it.

Here's a bus you might enjoy seeing; A Russian PAZ 3201-S

All-Wheel-Drive BUS 98% factory original Soviet BEAST! 4x4 AWD GAZ-66 Chassis | eBay

the turbo on both my dognose busses looks easy to take off.. on the DT-360 its right under the doghouse so thats an inside job... on my shorty its pretty accessible under the hood..
I do have a little oil in my valley.. cant tell where its coming from.. doesnt appear ot be the turbo... and doesnt look like I have an EBPV on my 444E... thats a happy grin there..

I actually rode in one of these every day for over a year. The ride quality was......sporty It also had a chronic overheating problem

I'd never pay what that ebay price shows... But I'd overcome whatever shortcomings necessary to rock a badass Russian rig. I WANT one!

I'd bet they don't bring $45k in Russia. It's just an interesting old bus.

Ok, I get it. It's still in Russia. Now it makes much less sense than it did when I thought it was in the US.

From what I've seen the communist countries have a lot of vintage motorcycles and other vehicles that they still use.

Im not sure about Russia as they arent seen around too often, mostly cheap chinese and korean built buses now, although Im sure if you go out to the rural areas you will still find the old ones in action

Where I mostly seen the old soviet equipment was in the former Soviet countries such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.(I work in Oil so spent many years in this region). Every other vehicle on the road is Soviet era. Can buy them super cheap. I bet that bus wouldnt cost more than $1000 locally.

If they're old enough, they may be importable and all that.
IDK why, but I just have a soft spot for soviet surplus stuff.

maybe because their newer??

the guys from australia trying to import the Land Rover Defenders into the USA are having a crazy heck of a time with red tape..

Rover sells a lot of cars here but the Derfender (was once sold here) is no longer.. but people want them.
