Many of you have probably seen this. It shows the transmission cases to identify which transmissions are which and a bit more.

Yeah, I think I missed that date thing. Interesting how much it went for in 2015.

The Super II had design input from MIT. Most of the work was done in the driver's compartment for ergonomics. Outside of the front and rear cap the bus is basically identical to the classic Supercoach.

Most of the Super II's were rear engine buses due in large part to the first batch were a special order "green" energy fueled bus. It used Detroit Diesel 6V-92's running on methanol. The specific buses are easily identifiable by a screened compartment on the street side in front of the rear axle. The screened compartment had a special cooler for the fuel so that it would be in a form that the engine could use.

Suffice it to say, the experiment didn't do much except waste a bunch of $$$$$.

All of those buses had the methanol tanks and associated plumbing removed and standard diesel tanks and plumbing installed.

I have found most people either hate or love the Super II. There are few people who fall in between.

Considering the fact the Supercoach was in continuous production with only some running production changes for more than 40 years says something about the original design.

I have always wondered why Crown didn't incorporate the ergonomic changes of the Super II into the Supercoach. The improved ergonomics would have made the driver's life a lot easier while still giving the purists the same look. I know Crown changed the basic dash area and driver's compartment several times over the years so the changes shouldn't have "offended" the purists.

so is that one listed a methanol bus or is it a standard diesel? I like the look of that particular bus.. the single-sash windows are totally cool too.

I don't see the screen in front of the drives that he was talking about.

All of the methanol fueled buses were re-fueled a long time ago.

The methanol fuel just didn't work in a bus.

I don't think the experiment even lasted two years.

Among the problems is they had a couple of the buses burn to the ground. Fortunately no one was hurt. But methanol is VERY flammable, volatile, and somewhat unstable particularly when compared to diesel fuel.

Yes!

When it gets warm enough it will flash combust. Which is why they had to build in fuel coolers. Not exactly the sort of fuel you want when transporting kids to and from school.

I thought all alcohol needed cooled.. I had a fuel cooler in my hotrod monte carlo that I had built to run E-85. when I was going to the track i filled the canister with ice and water... when I was out on the street, I left water in it and the suction line from my A/C ran through the can so that kept the fuel cool..

I wouldn't want to run alcohol in any vehicle... It's a waste of perfectly good alcohol.

It's still widely used in racing. Some series mandate it as the only fuel which can be used.

If this bus had AC and was closer, I'd buy it just for parts but I can't tow a bus. Currently $710... If someone would like to ship me the storage lockers that would be great.

I'm interested in more info about the "Aleson 3 speed" transmission. I've never heard of that one before.
