I think some get ahold of abus with no idea what engine or trans it has, they decide to sell it and get asked whatHP it has so time to google and they see that cat 3126 put out 330hp so they put that in their sales ad.. not knowing there are 185hp to 330hp variants.. ultimately if someone wants to buy abus and the chassis manufacturer is still in business then call them up with the VIN( usu a dealer) and they will tell you what the bus had. Or if the seller can post a pic .. schools do sometimes swap motors but usually it’s done to update a specific bad motor type that blew up to a better one.. ie Cummins makes a swap kit to replace maxxfoce7 In IC busses and has been doing so for awhile.

If someone just repowered to a 3208 it would have had 2- or 3-speeds in reverse and one speed forward.
Changing everything to a T-drive is possible but it would have required extensive body work in the engine bulkhead to accommodate the T-drive orientation of the engine.
Changing the engine bulkhead in any GM bus requires some serious engineering knowledge as that is to what the engine attaches to the bus. Failed engine bulkheads leave the power package still attached to the rear end but sitting on the ground a half block behind the bus.

Hey Cowlitz,
You are a wealth of bus knowledge and a great resource on this board. Thank you for your contributions.
I did not know that was a left turning 6-71 in those. The mention of a CAT did not give me any pause.....

Those Wayne Busettes were okay little buses but those were built in the days before the van/cut-away chassis had a rail chassis. Those utilized the standard GM G-series van unit construction platform with the body cut off. Under the bus floor you will find the original van floor. That kind of construction was really bad for rust.
Also, because there really isn't a frame under the bus if the bus is picked up from the back bumper for any particular reason you run the real risk of pulling the body off of the frame. A friend of mine in the bus business didn't want to pull the driveline or axles for a short tow so he told the tow truck driver to just lift the rear of the bus to tow it. Bad idea!
Over time it was not unusual to find those buses really drooping as the tin worm ate it's way through the original van floor.

Hi there,
I am selling my bluebird minibird shortbus, currently parked in Bainbridge Island, WA. I converted her myself but she still needs to be completely finished out. I posted most all the details and photos on the link below. I have lived fulltime in the bus for the past 8 months with my 1-year-old son, and have loved it but just time for us to do something else. Thanks!

That's actually pretty reasonable considering the FB page it's from. I've seen lots of optimistic asking prices on that page

'Unicorn Bus' -- 2002 BlueBird Commercial bus with a Cummins ISC (8.3L) rear-engine, and Allison B400 transmission. < 40k original miles, and has a PowerTech diesel generator and pass-thru storage. Bidding ends tomorrow night... good luck!

That is a nicely speced bus. ISC 6th unlocked and 4.78 gears. Plus a gen it probably runs the AC when parked. I bet it goes for $$$$$$. If not someone needs to buy it!

That's one of the only buses I've seen here with a price tag over $5k that we all agree is a good deal. Whether it sells near there or not remains to be seen.

It really all depends.
I'd feel good up to 9 grand. MAYBE 10.
But if it were mine I'd be posting on fb and cl for 15k or more.

If it really does only have 38k miles and rust free it probably is worth 10k. Its more than likely a higher hp/torque ISC having the b400 behind it, 4.78 gears, 6th unlocked, engine brake, AC, gen. I think it has a shade over the roof as well. It looks like it was a prison bus which would make the low milage possible. If I hadn't just got mine I would seriously consider this one although its a little long and the seats look a little firm
