My bus had 252k on it when I purchased it and it runs like a champ with no issues. I put another 3k+ on the trip home with no issues. It all depends on how well the bus was maintained. Some with 150k are worn out compared to my 252k.Still say 600K between rebuilds would be very rare.

Generally speaking most school buses average 10K miles per year. In the early years while still under warranty they will be on routes exceeding 100 miles per day. As the bus ages and gets closer to retirement the routes they go on are easy routes or out the bus gets sent out to the spare line and put on almost no miles in the last year or two.
I drove the same daily route for almost ten years that went about 120 miles per day. I always drove a newer bus when I had that route.
The last year I drove a big bus daily route my daily mileage was 27 miles per day. My regular bus was almost ten years old when I had that route.
120+27=147 miles. Divide by 2=73.5 average over the life of the bus. Multiply by 180 days=13,230 miles per year. 13,230 miles times 15 years=198,450.
Of course the mileage will vary depending upon the geography of the school district. Many urban and suburban school districts will have routes they consider long that are only 50 miles per day. At an average of 50 miles per day after 15 years the total mileage would be 135,000 miles.
If the service life is extended to 20 years you are going to put on a lot more miles. If the service life is shortened to only 12 years, which a lot of schools are doing these days, the mileage will be considerably lower.
If you know the district in which the bus saw service you can get a pretty good idea if 135,000 miles is realistic or if 195,000 miles is more realistic.
The Olympia buses that were for sale the other day on one of the auction sites had mileage that made sense to me. As for this bus, not knowing the district I have no idea if it is realistic or not. But the numbers do seem a bit on the low side.

I think one of the biggest mistake a new buyer makes is "Too bad it's too far." So often I see them settle for a bus that may need improvements to begin with that exceed what the travel cost would have been. I went almost 3k miles and spent almost $1500 in fuel to get home, money well spent.

With that many hours I would suspect speedo mileage is incorrect and the higher mileage would coincide with the hours it has. 114k on a 21 year old bus is highly unusual. That bus should have closer to 210K.

Truth here. Just calculate the costs of travel into the price. I rode my scooter across four states to get my current bus and drove it back with the scooter in the bus.

I also believe that patience goes a long way. I waited for the bus I wanted at the price I wanted within the travel area I wanted. Sure I waited about 6 months longer then I could have... But the constraints of my job made it impossible for me to take more than two days off to retrieve the bus.
Buses go on sale everyday in many places. I got to be an expert at checking out auction sites... Bus dealer websites... Searching Craigslist ads from all over the country... This forum and thread in particular...

Two DT530 RE buses in AZ. Can't even get the noobs to look at these, so fair game lurkers!
https://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/au...ew?auc=2277693
These are decked-out. Pretty much unicorns. A dealer is the high bidder and I'm sure they're gona be relisted at around 20k-25k once they take possession.

Me too, but this sure would be an easy one to make a bunch of money on.
I probably wouldn't need to even bring it to fl. Could likely store it out there in AZ and sell it via CL.
Just bored and dreaming...

Current Auctions for Peoria Unified School District #11
They have 10 buses up for auction. Some really nice ones whether you’re looking for a full size or a shorty.
If I had the time I would definitely be bidding on at least one, if not more, of the DT530 buses. These buses are a little harder to work on than some other rear engine buses due to the fact that they have the radiator mounted in the center. The plus is that they tend to cool a little better in that location.

That's my second bus, too bad I'm not in a position to put another one in the yard yet. Surprised with only one day left it's only at $800.
