I ran into a couple from Denmark that converted a similar rig. The did the conversion in Denmark then had it shipped to Newfanland. They traveled Canada, the US and we caught up with them in San Carlos, Sonora.

They stood out just a bit

If someone is looking for a BIG bus, Huston TX is retiring over a dozen MCI 45' coaches built in 2001-2003 with the desirable Series 60 engines and Allison B500 transmissions.

I want one.......

The B50 on the S60 is 750k miles. One of those MCI's only has 400k miles. I have seen MCI's still in service with nearly a million miles on them. My Eagle had 960k miles on it when I sold it and ran & drove great.

Parts and labor for coaches are much more expensive than for skoolies but the drive trains of these MCI's are as economically maintainable for an individual as it gets in that weight class.

I wish I had a use case for one of these monsters.

International RE bus with T444E

Our local recycler in Northern Maryland has an International bus with a T444E in the REAR.

It was used by a church and has under 40k on the odometer. Engine bay looks like this is true. Did not check all nooks and crannies for rust but it looks solid.

Color is Navy blue. They ask $3000 for it but I am sure it can be had for $2500 or so.

Engine and transmission (looked like an AT545) in this bus are bone stock and the differential reverses the rotation of the rear facing engine/transmission. Upgrading to a MT643 transmission should be easy.

All the other buses they have are Thomas Safe T liners with the dreaded CAT engines and they want over $5000 for those.

why is the CAT "dreaded"? in an RE bus I'd take a 3126 CAT over a T-444E any day.. and im a huge 444E fan..



the 444E in such a heavy RE bus to me lacks the low end torque.. never have seen one in an RE with 545 but its surely possible.. that would make it even more of a dog..

Everything that I have heard about the CATs is that they run great until they need repair, and that the repairs are too expensive. That is just hearsay on my part. Have you heard different about the cost or difficulty of repair?

I ran several cranes with CATs in them and our mechanics frequently had to fly out a CAT specialist to diagnose the issue. And then it would take weeks of troubleshooting sometimes, even with the specialist. That’s not on a bus though.

I personally am a fan of the Dt powered 3/4 length dognose. California buses are likely to be low on the rust as well, if that's actually where they originated from.

I think finding anyone other than a Cat mechanic to work on one is difficult. Cat mechanics know this and can charge more because the market has little choice.

Roadgoing Cats can be worked on by virtually ANY diesel mechanic. All the local shops work on my 3126 and it doesn't cost any extra over owning a Navistar or Cummins. They ALL charge 80-140 an hour.
