The better transmission is required only with the more powerful engines and/or heavier weight. Specs here:

Also depends on what the original build specs were. Captain Obvious is rated at 33k, but has the dreaded 545

Bussie McBusface is rated at 33k, and has the 643. But I've seen the same bus with a 545.

That's a surprise.
I imagine it was possible to order the bigger transmission in a lighter bus, but it should not be possible to order a transmission to be used beyond its factory rated strength. So I have no answer to that.

Nice looking bus! That will go for a pretty penny. One of the local used car dealers has several nice Bluebirds that are white and were former govt buses like this one. Bet it gets snapped up from someone like them.
