The better transmission is required only with the more powerful engines and/or heavier weight. Specs here:
http://www.skoolie.net/forums/f33/ho...pecs-1641.html

Example: Millicent has the MT643 because her GVWR is 31,000 pounds.

Also depends on what the original build specs were. Captain Obvious is rated at 33k, but has the dreaded 545

Bussie McBusface is rated at 33k, and has the 643. But I've seen the same bus with a 545.

There's some cheap buses in Utah with 5 hours remaining.

Public Surplus: School Bus

Even the ones people are competitively bidding on are going cheap.

That's a surprise.
I imagine it was possible to order the bigger transmission in a lighter bus, but it should not be possible to order a transmission to be used beyond its factory rated strength. So I have no answer to that.

Nice looking bus! That will go for a pretty penny. One of the local used car dealers has several nice Bluebirds that are white and were former govt buses like this one. Bet it gets snapped up from someone like them.

And by "crown" I meant "gillig" - not sure what happened to my brain there. Oh, and this thing has 700,000+ miles on it?

Those FEs have the 8.3 Cummins and the Allison MT643 which makes them an even better deal! A few of them have some engine problems though

Not sure if this is legitimate or not. 95 international dognose with a dt466. "Runs great." Body "in great shape." "excellent" tires.

Needs rear bumper, batteries, and complete brake overhaul.

Posted 4 hrs ago and asking $700...

Might be. They disclose it needs brakes and batteries. So what else may it need they aren't telling or don't know?

How about this one! DT466 WITH AUTO AND ELECTRIC RETARDER!

converted 40' bus / toy hauler

$6250 TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's right, the project you always wanted ready for your final touches.
Converted 40' diesel school bus set up and used for amateur racing.
8×16 "garage" space with one built in 4 drawer tool box and gear locker. Can haul up to 4 full size motorcycles and room for a pit bike.
The other 34' are your living quaters complete with full kitchen (fridge, sink, gas grill, and counter space).
Provisions are in place for toilet (with tank *no holes cut yet* or Porta pot) 4×2 shower stall installed but not plumbed again no holes cut yet. Laminate hard wood flooring for the living quarters.
You won't need it now, but there is a coal/wood stove for those nights that you don't want to sleep with a generator. The stove was originally mounted in a caboose. Very solid no rust.
Blinds throughout to keep others attention at bay. Still a ton of room for you to design your own living room layout. Roof access from the inside with built in ladder well that doubles as the door to the garage space. 5 exterior access lockable storage bins.

Mechanically the rig is a beast! I am a very accomplished diesel technician and have handled all the maintenance myself.
International DT466 all mechanical mated to a 4 speed automatic with electric 4 stage retarder. Drive train alone is worth 5k (from what I've been offered)
Drive train has a few clicks past 100 and as you know diesels last.
The rig uses full size 11r22.5 tires (same as a tractor trailer) they are in great shape without any rot and tons of tread left.
All oils and filters are fresh excluding one 1000 mile dash from Northern Arizona to here. She ran like a top averaging 12 mpg.
Registered in AZ and will provide notarized bill of sale.
*The Honda cb 750 goes with the rig, non negotiable. will also do bill of sale with it.
