From EBAY: "1996 Spartan School bus,5.9 cummins diesel, automatic transmission, air brakes. This bus came from the Benton Arkansas school district that owned it since it was new. It was the football team bus.it is extra long, has 30 seats. It was well maintained by the school district. It has 111,821 miles on it. I bought it to convert it to a motor home but have changed my mind. The bus runs good and has good tires on it. Located in Oil City,La. which is 20 miles north of Shreveport."

Between Manson and being a movie star, I'm sure there's some sucker out there willing to part with $40k. Heck, $40k would fund a REALLY NICE conversion.

What is the deal with that website?

I have seen at least two busses listed on their site that are offered by private party elsewhere.

There was a thread regarding a prison bus for sale in Idaho. The private seller was asking around $7500. I saw it when he put it up for sale on eBay. The auction only made it up to around $3800 and did not meet the reserve. I messaged the seller and he still has it for sale for $7500 locally.

On that website they have the same bus for $28k. I looked in fine detail and was able to pick out the same scratches on the bumpers etc. The pics posted on this site are the same pics that are on the bussesforsale.com website.

I messaged the folks at bussesforsale.com and they responded that the bus is in Idaho and I would need to make an appointment to inspect it.

No doubt the same bus as on eBay and in the thread here. Link: 1998 Thomas SAF T Liner Gutted Ready for RV Build Rear Engine 8 3 Cummins | eBay=

It looks almost as it these folks are gathering info on busses for sale by others and offering the same bus at a higher price and hoping to broker a deal.

What do you all think?

PS: I just managed to track down the ad for the prison bus: http://www.bargainbusnews.com/Buses/...asSaf-T-Liner/

I really don't know. Maybe busesforsale.com is a consignment service for people looking to sell their bus(es)? Their prices are incredibly high. I can't believe they sell many. The cross-postings, at very different asking prices, are interesting. Good catch. Anyone looking at a bus on b4s.com should do a search on at least EBAY (maybe CL) before contacting b4s.

I agree, Steve, that site is really fishy. Most of the time their prices are inflated to laughable levels and details on the listings are usually scarce.

And that HORRIBLE layout!! Searching that site for anything is nearly impossible since it looks like it was designed in the late '90s.

I keep seeing lackluster buses selling for huge prices lately.
The export market must be picking up sharply or something.

The rust and benz engine are two pretty big detriments.

I saw that. Crazy huh? Could be the export market, as EastCoastCB suggested. I'm also wondering if skoolies have become so popular now that used trip buses have an extra demand domestically too. Perhaps an extra demand on ones that were never yellow with flashing lights, with approximately 100k miles on them?

Most of the buses here in the Northeast are junk by the time they get sold. Between rust and 200+k miles on them, they're used hard. Besides, diesel-pushers seem not to be near as popular in the NE as they are in much of the rest of the country.

The best buses for skoolie fans seem to be getting crushed on the west coast.

I've thought about it, and I think it could be pretty cool. . .the only problem is most of those buses are governed at 55. Maybe you'll reach 57 going downhill with a tailwind. . .

While I get that not all highway travel needs to be at 70+ mph, 55 can be a bit dangerously slow on some roads.

If its a low-floor model, then you might find it tricky to get under it to do work/service/construct your conversion.

Another reason to like skoolies - and truck frames - you can possibly find highway gearing with a higher top speed.

(In all fairness, I've totally considered getting an RTS bus. Supposedly, their construction is modular - so I could un-bolt a few sections in the middle, and get my own custom shorty RTS/camper. )
