1985 Blue Bird School Bus - $4000
1985 Blue Bird School Bus - $4000
Rear Engine
Air Brakes
Cat 3208
14 Windows
Tires look decent to good
109k Miles (?)
Runs and Drives
Has some "old bus issues"
San Jose California
Ad states the odometer and hours have "probably turned over once or twice" That's seems highly unlikely (if the odo turned over just once the bus would have 1.1 Million miles on it).. And if we assume odo and hour meter are correct, it works out to 12 miles per 'running hour', which doesn't seem too hard to believe, and if anything seems pretty low. If it turned over once or twice it would be 6 miles/hr or 4 miles/hr respectively which seems really low.

No pics of the tires... could be $3,200 plus another $3K for new rubber.

Actually if I was going to get a 5.9 in a full size pusher I'd want one of the later 24v electronic ones since they're turned up to 280ish HP and are surprisingly decent power wise.
Also this bus was being discussed on Skoolie Nation Facebook page, apparently a few members there went to look at the bus in person and the roof on the side by the broken windows is pushed in pretty badly. Basically the entire bus shell has been compromised by what looks like roll over damage.

Engines are available in a variety of ratings. The most common 5.9 rating in school buses is 190.

That got my attention so I did a little looking for replacement caps. Richard and Karen of R&M Fiberglass don't make Eagle caps anymore but they have the molds in storage. Apparently the molds require some repairs before they would be usable.

Really? I thought that's where they are usually found (but I pay very little attention to buses over ~24ft, so really I'm pretty clueless). I haven't seen many in true short buses but I haven't been looking very long. Where are they normally found, mid sized 24-34ft buses?

The 5.9 has earned its reputation as a good motor, and is available is the same general power range as the 8.3 for most years. The 8.3 is cheaper and easier to rebuild and makes its power a little lower, but typically also has a lower RPM limit. You sure won't be counting cubic inches when going up a hill.
My ISB is rated at 260hp. it's got plenty of punch and will run 70 down the road. If I get 6th unlocked that'll add another 10mph (really it'll improve my MPG at 70 because 70 is plenty fast for me), my bus is 38ft with MD3060.
Generally speaking, the transmission and rear axle ration are more important factors than the engine.

Here's an odd one. I wasn't aware that Bluebird ever offered Cat motors in the TCRE buses. This one has a 3116 as confirmed by Vantage portal and Cat serial # lookup. Previously I was under the impression that only the 5.9 & 8.3 Cummins were available on the TCRE.
Not sure what kind of reputation the 3116 has as opposed to its newer sibling the 3126 but this bus could be worth it for the right person. AZ buses are CLEAN and will save you a ton of time and money (not) repairing rusted out floors and body panels.

Nice 2003 AARE in Oregon. $5500 starting bid Bet they're starting to catch on about how desirable these are.

Bunch of MaxxForce7 buses on 422 going cheap. Nobody wants those and it shows! I wonder how hard it would be to bulletproof one...

I hadn't seen a TCRE with a Cat but I learned a while ago that they'd build whatever you told them you wanted if that's what it took to get an order placed.
