This should clear up the engine question:
And your post clearly shows that you're wrong.

The push button shifter is definitely not an at545. It's one of the world series trannies 3000 series or bigger.

That is also an 8.3. You can tell by the intake manifold. As well as the esn printed on the valve cover coming back to an 260hp ISC, which matches the esn printed on the chassis plate.

The trans is a md3060 based off the serial number listed on the chassis plate being 6510300680.

Chances are everything that makes it a prison bus will be removed, so you basically have an 01 BB, 5.9/3060 shell to start without worth the asking price, even if the miles are correct.

No man its an inline 6 cylinder engine.

The Cummins ISC is a straight-six diesel engine with a displacement of 8.3 litres (506.5 cu in). Cummins began producing the engines in 1998. The engine was based on its predecessor, the Cummins C 8.3-litre engine originally introduced in 1985 as the 6C8.3 (this was co-designed with the Case Corporation, along with the smaller 6B5.9). The first electronic version, known as the C8.3E and designed for the urban bus market exclusively, went into production in late 1996.

I have no problem with extending everything fo a straight 6 but everything I have found on the 8.3 it is a v-block but I just assumed 8-cylinders?
Used 10,000$ for motor and 4-5 grand for a used 3060 tranny?

WHy buy a used engine for ten grand? Buy a whole running bus for less than half that and just take what you need/want.
Heck here's an engine, trans, and tires for less than ten grand.

The VIN is also showing it to be an 8.3.
This is almost a new bus and its maybe $1500 more than similar school buses run up to in the auctions lately. I'm surprised its still for sale.

I'm saying that everything will be removed by the purchaser. So everything that makes it a prison bus will be gone, and then it's just another bus. Would lower miles, correct tranny, and big motor make it worth more, sure. But $9K?
But then again some people have more disposable money than I do, or care to spend.

Oh, totally agreed. I'm not normally too jazzed about prison buses. But this is a rare opportunity for someone to get what appears to be as close to a new 2001 Bluebird as feasable. I've seen clapped out yellow buses with 300k for sale for more money than this, and this one's even in FL. Just go to BGA's site and you'll see what a bargain this is for a FL bus, regardless of mileage and condition.
They're asking $8250. I'll bet whoever shows up with $7500 cash gets this low mile 8.3 with OD. And they won't even have yellow paint peaking out from every crevice.

not only the motor and tranny have less miles, but the rear end and drive train, body, bearings, hoses, brakes, front end, springs, bushings, wiring, lights - etc etc have less mileage, the body less rattles, less leaks, less wear and tear everywhere - I've seen prison buses on line, decent price, decent motors, but too far away to think about looking at it - other than police/guard electronics/radios, nothing had been removed

The previous generation was mechanical but was always an inline engine.

You can get an all mechanical 8.3 Cummins. Search "Cummins 6ct". That's the mechanical version. No promises that it will fit in place of an 8.2. but I wouldn't fear an electronic Cummins. And at this price and mileage, a person searching would be dumb not to consider it. Jmo but the engine/trans as a good running takeout would be worth around 10k.

I don't know anything about this bus. it looks awesome. But I would caution you against assuming prison bus equals low mileage. If it was genuinely used specifically by a prison, this could be true. But most buses this size that are used within the corrections system are being used by jails. An entirely different situation. A jail bus transports a full load of prisoners, often from several different jails located far apart, to several different courthouses Monday through Friday every week of the year. Sometimes twice in one day, to different court sessions. People in prison don't need to be transported that often, but people in jail go to court all the time because many of them are being held while awaiting arraignment or trial. So it depends on where this bus served, that is, what part of the country AND what sort of facility used it.
