Who Is Bidding On This!?

Rust, oil in coolant, Cat... looks pretty well banged up like a lot of the GA buses.
Its already up past four GRAND!
WHY??

It was previously owned by the Sinoloa Cartel and there are three thousand pounds of cocaine in the belly storage.

That's the only reasonable explanation.

I'm going to roll around laughing if we see a new thread and someone showing off their "find". Just sayin.

I didn't know they were using Cat engines back then. I bet it has a Cummins.

Every now and then there will be a bidding war between several obviously competitive and financially unlimited individuals. Other times someone's teenage kid will get on their parents laptop and begin bidding, or so reported. Most of the time you'll see the equipment relisted in a later auction because the buyer defaulted after finding out they had seriously overspent.

I have yet to run the VIN but ... lots of belly storage, engine size questionable (the DT466 engine is a 7.6, not a 6.6), might have highway gearing ... the oil in coolant issue might be something they are willing/able to fix, or maybe they have a good engine to go in it.

Something to consider is that these public auctions are often influenced by buyers wanting to eliminate the competition. An ounce of dirty motor oil dumped into the radiator eliminates a lot of competitive bidding on that vehicle. It's pretty common for people to skuttle vehicles so they sell for less, but that doesn't exactly fit with this sale.

I've seen 7 cab drivers from Seattle come all the way to Salem Oregon to buy a nasty looking old worn out Crown Vic that has no real apparent value. Of course they wouldn't talk, and after the sale I never saw them again. When a broken down crappy car sells for $5k or $6k, something is going on. I've never been interested enough to bid against that type of group, but it makes you wonder. Are those seven cab drivers in Barbados now?

ehicles for export are HUGE business.. also the really shady "white collar" car criminals will by said crappy car and re-vin a strolen car of the same type.. so they pay 5k for a busted up crown vic.. part it out, chop it up and still get 3 or 4k in parts.. esp good body panels, engines and transmissions..

thern they de-tag it and re-vin a stolen crown vic of the same year thats in mint shape.. and sell it for 10k or more.. the DMV doesnt look under the car at the frame.. they simply look at the car on inspection and tag the VIN from the windshield.. if the mileage is off the theif fabricates a "dash replaced, true mileage intact" sticker.. so it doesnt even get flagged as a TMU.. and off it goes to its unsuspectring new owner..

I can understand the concept of a VIN being reused for another vehicle. It's not necessary to pay this much for a bus that looks like it's already made several passes past the stumps on the corners in my driveway.

Concerning the Crown Vic, it just doesn't make sense to pay a lot considering there are so many Vics that go for $500 or less. They are beat after some of the chases they've been on. Maybe it's my lack of understanding of this type of activity, but the only thing that makes a nasty car worth buying for a lot of money is like Tango said. Something in it more valuable than the VIN. I never figured out who was bidding against them to cause the price to go that high.
In Salem the police work the drug dogs in the closed parking area of PS, and apparently find things enough to make it worth their while.
