Used Veggie Oil on Dirty Jobs

Last nights episode of Dirty Jobs which you can see aired again this weekend showed the entire process of properly preparing WVO for use in a car.

First he had to collect all the oil at a mexican restaraunt and then filter it and add in chemicals. Very interesting I don't think anyone on this board has been going as far to refine the oil as these guys were doing.

I wish they would quit showing this stuff on TEEVEE.

There won't be any left for me!!!

I eventually want to crack WVO and make biodiesel, but just need to get a WVO conversion going so I can save some bucks on fuel.

I thought that too, but I haven't gotten around to buying a diesel yet anyway.

I watched it last night and my primary question is why didn't he wash the biodiesel with water after processing, my other question is how would you dispose of the dirty water you washed the diesel with? Other than that it was kinda cool but they spent way too much time showing him wash the kitchen of the restaurant and not enough going over the whole biodiesel thing. Anyway my wife watched the show with me and now she's convinced that we need to get into doing this. I mentioned it to her in passing earlier when we were having that discussion on the board about the biodiesel web sites, and now she's convinced!!! There really are none more fanatic than the recently converted, so I forsee an entire new project in my future.

The main question I had is what does he do with that Glycerine he poured out. Is there is a user for it?

I was thinking the same thing about it being on tv. I bet most people are too lazy to collect the stuff and brew it into bio diesel or modify their vehicles. A show on the history channel about the hisotry of gas stations mentioned some statistic that most people consider filling up their car a big inconvience. If that is true I doubt they will go to the trouble of getting WVO. Just like the same people that would rather pay a big gas bill than spend a weekend cutting firewood for free.

that's an excellent point. The average american is NOT going to go dumpster diving for veggie oil!

There is only so many restaurants though, I could easily see enough people in my town doing it that there would be a shortage of grease.

I could see there being a shortage in small towns but big cities I doubt that would happen. When the price of fuel goes back down or the average person gets used to the high prices I bet lots will lose intrest. Somewhere I saw somebody post that they got a quote for something like $168 a gallon for virgin soybean oil. The only catch was you have to buy 500 gallons at a time. It would still be cheaper than diesel and you would not have to worry about filtering and water contamination.

I have also thought about that if all the restraunts were being cleaned out you could offer a few bucks to take it. I have trouble sleeping so I have been thinking about veggy oil. I guess you could say I am more than a bus nut

Being a resturant worker I can tell you that most would be happy just to have someone take it..always ask first though as some of the bigger places have deals worked out with pet food companys. I plan on doing this if I can find a desiel motor for my nissan pickup..one thing I would like to do is install a simple filter that would fit into the barrel to catch the large stuff (fries and such)..you might not believe the amount of crud that friers catch.

I'm thinking of starting with just WVO oil conversion, and moving on to cracking it later. I was wondering this, too. There are also FFAs (free fatty acids) that separate out. FFAs are powerful degreasers. If you knew someone who needed degreasers (like the restaurant you get the oil from) you could bottle that and let them have it. The glycerine you might be able to use for making glycerine soap...sell it at the flea-market. I'll have to study up on soapmaking again!

Why worry about disposing of it if you can get people to pay you to haul it off for you!!
