Using a sedimenter

I've only come across the idea once of using a sedimenter with a bottom valve for clearing out gunk and water before it reaches the filters. Does anyone use one, and if so does it significantly increase the amount of time (gallons of fuel) between filter changes?

Here's the one I'm looking at: Pre Filter Water Animal Fat Particulate Trap Diesel Biodiesel WVO Sedimenter 12V | eBay
