School buses are narrower than some coaches. Some coaches are 96 inches like school buses. The others coaches are 102"

So we're talking 6" difference maximum? Technically I guess that's a legitimate concern although not substantiated in my opinion. Weren't coaches full of old people burning in Florida on the freeway a few years ago? Not a good image for coaches.

Did some low tech a while ago and there's about 2200 school bus fires in the US yearly with about 440,000 buses.

AARP Hardford insurance
Ok I know that there are a whole lot of younger folks on here and that is amazing, but my question is more directed at the over 50 crowd.
Do any of you belong to aarp and have you tried there recommended insurance
Company?

Once the wheels, engine, etc catch the rest of the bus goes quickly.

Yeah, the Hartford through AARP is pretty good. I left because the policy kept getting more expensive each time I renewed. It starts very reasonable pretty much undercutting most other insurers.

my last one burned up.. fire got started by a careless chevelle owner spilling gasoline in the shared indoor storage facility.. the fire lit some plastic wires or something under the rear bumper on fire.. (gasoline had run inder the bus).. the chevelle owners didnt realize I had 3 high capacity ABC's on my bus that couldve saved it and their car.. they panicked and tried to "beat out the fire " with their shirts..
the flames went on the outside of the bumper and broke a rear lower window.. and got the back seat on fire.. . I was told that the seat "BURST" into flames... which then melted and ignited the rear ceiling mounted Plastic air-conditioner unit... the heat from the fire melted anything I had in there and started to travel forward on the rubber floor... about the time it reach another seat(I only had a few seats in it) the fire dept got there.. they sprayed out the bus first as they felt it the highest risk to heavy damage of other vehicles or the building. then they put out the car... it took only minutes to get hot enough to melt out the rest of the seats.. the plastic window latches.. letting a lot of windows fall down.. giving the fire more air... being a short bus it left a massive coating of soot and grime on everything.. the defroster vents didnt melt... everything was wet and they cut all the main battery cables and smashed out the dash switch control panel to check for "extension" of the fire...
that bus was a little shortie and was registered as a "passenger vehicle" and insured as such... and state farm paid... that one was easy as it was registered as an '86' GMC Truck....
seems I cant do that now as state farm doesnt know what to do with "International" and 'carpenter'...

progressive and state farm both said they will insure me as a COMMERCIAL vehicle... it costs more than a RV policy.. but they had category "commercial vehicle for personal / NON business use..".. once I quite sayung its a converted skoolie (which mine is as close to a bus as the law will allow)... they had no issues with it...

They only charged me 600 or so the first year. Missed a payment and they jacked my price up to $800. I REALLY loathe everything about insurance, man.

Updates in last year
Bumping this thread to see if anyone thinks the marketplace is different in the last year. Im trying to buy a bus in NJ (or PA) and so far I havent had luck insuring it. Apparently there have been a lot of accidents when people convert to a toy hauler and so the industry is moving away from covering buses.
I figure the mantra of just buy and convert and youll find a way will to get in insured is still true, it just seems like it takes even more searching now...

Insurance companies don't care where you buy it, just what state you'll actually be insuring it in.

I'm told NJ rules are similar to OR rules for insuring. Would it offend you to register as a van, or even as a private bus like EC does?
