Any tips on registering out-of-state diesel bus in CA?

Hello everyone!

I am a volunteer for a church which has purchased an out-of-state (IL) school bus. We have the repaint complete, and have the binder with everything the CHP has told us to do per the "terminal manager's compliance checklist," which was awful in and of itself (driver's pull notices, DOT and CA #s, maintenance, inspections, driver's hours, etc). We are awaiting the CHP Motor Carrier Specialist's inspection, which we expect to pass.

Then comes the DMV registration. Early on in this process we found that no one at the DMV knew anything about registering a former bus for a church (some have called it a B bus, "without operating authority"). It is insured as a bus, but hasn't been registered here in CA since we purchased it. We are a non-profit, planning on using this bus to take students/leaders to events, camps, etc.

Any tips or suggestions as to the most knowledgeable DMV in the Bay Area (N. Cal)? The bus is a 2013 Thomas Saf-T-Liner with a Commins diesel engine (77 pass). I don't even know if diesel has to pass a smog test. . . any tips or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

its easier than you might think. best perk: exempt. worst part only one insurance company will cover you.

california! yeoow! be careful.. it can be VERY tough to bring a vehicle into that state if its only a 49 state emission compliant vehicle.. if that bus is a 50 state compliant then you should be able to get it in.

diesels there do have tests and inspections, esp if you are going to run it as a church bus it will fall under the set church bus rules for your state.. I know in OHIO church busses follow just the same rules as commercial coaches do.. CDL driver, Hours of Service, paper logs (ELD not required).. yearly DOT inspections, etc.
