Re: Bus titles & weight

My title does not have the weight on it AFAIK. I do have the bus "classed" by weight though. My plates have a letter on them (H in my case) which indicates the highest GVW I have paid taxes for. If you want it to be able to haul more weight you pay more tax when you get your plates and you are allowed a higher class. It's a pretty easy system though I pay as much for my bus as I would if it were a commercial vehicle.

Re: Bus titles & weight

Nope. You just declare a weight. If you're underweight no big deal...you're just paying extra wheelage tax. If you're overweight you can get slapped with a pretty hefty fine, but RV's are not subject to weighing up at the stations so I don't know how you would get plucked. My bus teeters dangerous close to it's limit (like within 500 lbs with just me and a full tank of fuel ). Every year I tell myself I'm going to jump a class, but then I never do. Honestly, by the time we load up 5-6 people, their stuff, food, water, coolers in addition to the fridge, firewood, instruments, extra fuel, the gennie, etc I think I might be best served by jumping two weight classes (3000 lbs per class), but damn if that doesn't sting in the pocketbook.

Re: Bus titles & weight

I have not weighed mine yet, but will be doing so soon (I hope). My title (Virginia) DOES list the bus empty weight at 19,000# but does NOT list the GVW which should be 30,000#

1969 Chevy Bluebird 65 passenger. 17,400lbs ish with a full water tank and a almost full fuel tank and me and 1 other person on board. I happened to know the foreman at a local sand plant and gave him a call to see if it was ok to drive over his scale while I was in the area.

Re: Bus titles & weight

Same here, live a couple of miles down the road from a sand quarry - called and they weighed my bus empty for $10. Total weight without seats - 14,220 lbs. GVW rating - 25,880 lbs. Am in the process of conversion now, so the weight will change but I needed an empty for registration fees (KS).
