Buying small bus from a school district - California

A school district I work for in California is looking to get rid of two van chassis type school buses. They don't want to deal with the paperwork or whatever is required and want me to buy them for $1 as scrap. They currently have exempt plates.

My question is, is this doable? Will I be able to register them? Do I have to smog?

If needed I have a house in Nevada as well that I can register it to.

Here's the "whatever" they have to deal with (if the buses are 2003 or older): https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/trucks...egs/dmvreg.htm

Basically, trucks and buses that old need to be re-engined with a 2010 or newer engine, so a lot of school systems are going to be looking to dump buses. Luckily, motorhomes are exempt: https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/trucks...egs/others.htm, but you do have to report in to prevent your registration from being wrongly denied: https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/truckstop/azregs/edvr.htm

Score!
Don't know CA DMV rules on your new possessions, but you could easily take them to any of the other 48 continental states to register and or unload them.
Good luck...

Diesel trucks and buses with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR) that is greater than 14,001 pounds (lbs), must reduce exhaust emissions by meeting particulate matter (PM) filter requirements and upgrading to a 2010 or newer engine model year (EMY).

The Regulation applies to:

Diesel vehicles with a GVWR greater than 14,000 lbs.
Privately and federally owned trucks and buses that operate in California
Any person, business, school district, tribal reservation, or federal government agency that owns, operates, leases or rents affected vehicles.
The Regulation does not apply to:
Gasoline or dedicated natural gas vehicles
Solid Waste Collection Vehicles
Public Agency and Utility Vehicles (Not Federal)
Drayage (Port or Rail) Trucks
Transit/Urban Buses
Personal use motor homes or recreational vehicles

musigenesis, I think you are wrong about this. I’ve spent a lot of time researching this and even made a call to CARB. Those cutaway buses are all less than 14001 pounds GVWR and the rules do not apply.

You will have to pass smog. The test is pretty simple.

Visual tailpipe smoke test

ODB (if equipped) check for codes. Needs to be code free.

No emissions testing by machine

Same as any vehicle. The title will be SB. DMV didn’t care.
