Colorado Insurance Disaster!

Whelp....we had insurance and then we didn't.

Bought 1992 International 3000 Series on July 4th. Had insurance through Progressive.

On July 5th we had a blow out. Progressive is covering the blow out, BUT they canceled our policy as of August 3rd.

I'm scrambling to find new insurance and I'm having no luck.

Good Sam - Denied. Reasons: 1) Hail damage totaled my Outback in October 2014. 2) I was rear-ended in January 3) My husband had a no-fault accident in February (I'll spare you the details of how I think this reason is truly messed up)

Private Broker - Denied. Because it was a school bus.

I've got two other brokers working on it. A random one I found and someone from National General Insurance. HOWEVER, please let me know any others. I'm in a race to stay legal!

HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP!

Just relax and try to stay positive.
Someone out there will have a solution.

But folks, if you at all have a way, DON'T use insurance except to satisfy the law requiring you to have it.
The first thing an ins co does when one makes a claim with something like a bus is drop them. Happened to me once, too.

You'll get through this, but to others reading along out there- this is the harsh reality of insurance. Its but a mere piece of paper that the law requires us to buy.

How much damage was caused by the blowout that you filed a claim?

The grey tank was cracked open like a tin can, the muffler was ripped off and so was the piece that connects to the engine, and the lines to the fresh water tank where ripped out.

They say more than 40 % of drivers in FL have no insurance. I'd like to see them all off the road until they get coverage. Wow, traffic would be better and ins. rates would drop but it aint gonna happen.

How much would it have cost you to fix it yourself without insurance? I only submit an insurance claim for catastrophic events. For my buses, I have only had liability insurance since it is hard to just get that.

Another question, what kind of tires did you have? Virgin or recaps? What was the age of the tires. Many might not realize that tires can age out (my term) where the tire might look like they are good and have lots of tread but are too old to use safely.

Here is a search that talks about tire age.

How to read date codes on tires.

State Farm. If you're around Boulder, call Jason Modlin at the Brad Rose agency in Gunbarrel. Phone is 303.440.4416.

His family does skoolies, and he knows what he's talking about. We've got all our insurance through him now —*Allstate wouldn't cover our future skoolie, so we went with the closest agent we could find. What a lucky find he was!

Alex (definitely tell him I sent you!)

So far the damage is around 3-4K, we have our reasons for filling the claim. As for the tires, we had them inspected by a 3rd party before hand and are replacing them anyhow. It was just a run of bad luck. We've moved past that and are focusing on the insurance issue at hand since there is nothing I can do now about being dropped from progressive.

Any input on where to get insurance would be appreciated.

Thanks! Do you know who the underwriter is? We are in Denver but the bus is in Erie.

What do you mean by who the underwriter is? They're a State Farm agency, so the underwriter is State Farm...

We've got insurance! Through AIS, underwritten by National General. It's only liability, but hey it's better than NOTHING!

Hey- congrats, in my opinion, that's as GOOD AS IT GETS!

I wish I could only get liability... I'm paying 700 a year for "coverage" I don't want and will never use!

Might I inquire as to what other Colordans are paying for insurance on skoolies?

IIRC comprehensive was about $110/month and liability was about $90/month. We ended up buying a mobile home this summer, so Skoolie plans are on hold for a year or so, probably. (But Jason has definitely turned out to be a great insurance guy, and we're happy with the car, renters, homeowners, and personal umbrella policies we've got at State Farm now. They'll almost certainly get our school bus business when the time comes.)

Do you folks have the Cooperators in the US? On their website they explicitly state that they insure converted school bus. I'm with them and the rate is great for Ontario.. $300 a year or so..

Types of vehicles we insure (look under motorhome)

Not to my knowledge, but I grew up in Ottawa, and that's who we had for years. That was a long time ago.
