Re: Driving your bus home
In my state - oregon - you dont show them that the bus is converted.. you just tell them that it is, and they change the title and give you the tags... of course, you gotta have insurance card for the vehicle when you go in...

Re: Driving your bus home
I bought mine in NM and drove it to IN. Dealer provided 30 day tag, Insurance company wrote a 30 day liability policy.

Re: Driving your bus home
...what he said. I got a 60 day tag from dealer, and my insurance set me up with short term liability to work on it.

Re: Driving your bus home
In Virginia, the DMV will give you a 3 day tag to move the vehicle from point A to B. Call your insurance company and see if you can get a rider that covers you for the trip. OR, you could go ahead and insure it right away (like I did). I figured driving it home (3 hrs for me), was just the beginning of my driving experience, so I better go ahead and get used to it as quickly as possible by driving it as often as I could afford with fuel costing as much as it does now.

Re: Driving your bus home
Bought bus in NC (2009) drove thru NC, GA, TN, AL, MS, LA, TX (took forever!) and NM. We still aren't tagged. We have the original title and the bill of sale. We even parked the bus next to state troopers on the trip out.
Our Class C was bought in SC by a friend in NC. He drove it from NC to the Flea Market where he parked it for a year (lived in it on weekends) before selling it to us. TN DMV was amazed that it had not been titled until we titled it in TN.

Re: Driving your bus home
The way you do it is get a trip permit and an insurance binder, then drive. It's called the wild first ride. I suppose most of use drive home illegal in several ways, but most make it. The cops don't seem to notice a big yellow bus with no licsense plates--go figure.

Paint a large donut on the side and they will immediately stop you...(with tongues hanging out)...

Re: Driving your bus home
I used a 30 day trip permit from AZ mvd and GMAC insurance. I also added Good Sam's towing policy for a week just in case.

Regular folks never "see" the huge Peterbuilt loaded to the max with chrome and enough lights to light up a small town, pulling a 53 ft trailer covered in lights as well. So why would a cop see a yellow bus (ours was not yellow... filthy white and blue). And Stacey ran a red light in Tatum NM with a cop watching her. He was stopped in the opposite lane and I cleared the light on yellow (no way I could stop), hot on David's butt (or rather , the Jeep since David was towing the jeep with the unlicensed bus) and Stacey just blew thru it right behind me... pulling the food cart which was bright yellow at the time. It was like we were not even there.
