Help! I知 freaking out about insurance

Bought a 5 window short GMC 3500 in NY yesterday. Came home to NH and had it registered as a passenger van. Called around to get insurance so I can drive it home this weekend and nobody can help me. Progressive flat out said if it was ever a school bus we won稚 insure it. As soon as they type in the VIN they deny.

Allstate said they would since I said I was just going to use it for day hikes etc. Then an hour and a half later they called back to decline. They said it weighed too much for something not associated with a commercial business. Also that it was too big to go woth a commercial policy.

I was guessing it weighs 11,500? But GVW is with people in it and it will never have that many. I think I知 over stating the weight?

Help please. I may have just wasted thousands.

Call Kelly, ECCB can provide her number. She was able to have me a policy through another agent with Allstate. I made a down payment of $48 to get started with a liability policy on the TC2000 I just sold.
At this point it looks like it'll be few and far between of anything Progressive will insure now.

Are you shopping for comprehensive or simple liability?
I'm likely going to be in the same boat as you, if I can seal the deal on one similar to yours in the near future...

Join the community by going to the UserCP and fill out your profile so we know where you are what what bus you are dealing with. Impossible to answer your questions without that info.

Where in NH are you? We are over near Claremont. I'm guessing you are from a small town if you managed to get it registered in NH and it's not painted. We had to paint ours (covering up any SCHOOL BUS markings) and remove the Red/Yellow warning lights.

As for insurance, go find a State Farm agent and get a Commercial for Private Use policy while you are converting it. Once it's done, and you change the title to a Motorhome, they will insure it as such. We have gone through the whole process, except for the last step, but should have ours done in a month or two, I hope.

A good agent with DIY conversion experience in NH will be able to help.

Rarely less so than calling companies directly.

You know the VT path for Plan B right?

State Farm here in Ga. would not write CFPY policy, they sent me to a competitor and told me come back when it's converted and they will cover it.

I got basic, bare-bones insurance from Progessive thru an affiliate agent in Dover.

(Sorry, D'oh-vah. Losing my, "dam Yankee," accent. Survival trains hard... 🤠)

Bussy lites, district name, and, "School Bus" ALL blacked out, all around. (You have NO idea how many Sharpies that took..!) Still registered as a bus in NH.

Of course, they cancelled me w/i a couple months, but by then I was anchor-dropped, boots on the ground in TX, with no intent to move it for months...

Progressive is out as a skoolie insurer.
Hopefully its not a trending issue through other insurers...?

I would recommend calling a few different agents. I am with Allstate (in Florida)- but the first two agents I called said they absolutely do not insure Skoolies or school buses. I called a third and got liability insurance with no problem.
They had me insured from day 1 - with liability for $258 a year.

Be very honest with them - if anyone gives you advice to "not tell" your insurance agency something - they are setting you up for major issues down the road.
I let my agent know I just bought a retired school bus - and was going to convert it into a motor home.

Good luck. Live free or die!

I eventually wound up with insurance procured thru the Good Sam; once sufficient, RV-qualifying, modifications were effected.

Not sure what'll happen when I build my deck- they're not 'Keene' on that koncept...

allstate in vt, as a newbie I have had it 5 months liability only. After my conversion next month hope to find better coverage (theft/fire...)

i was freaking too, got progressive for a month then they cancelled. Yep insurance seems a PIA .

BTW I remember when I was in college in MASS decades ago, I used my friends address in NH to register my car because YOU DIDNT NEED INSURANCE IN NH. I thought that was still the case...

When Progressive dropped you were you on a monthly payment plan?
A lot of people are under the misconception that you don't need any kind of insurance in N.H.. While it is not mandatory that you have conventional insurance, you still have to show financial responsibility by buying a bond or having funds in escrow.

For the record: Automobile/any motor vehicle, insurance in NH is not a requirement to register a vehicle UNLESS you've had an at fault accident, a DWI/DUI, or accrued enough negative points against your driver license to require it.

Anyone who owns property here that doesn't carry minimal liability insurance on their vehicles is a fool. The property can have a lien placed on it if you are uninsured and are at fault in an accident. Had a co=worker lose his property for that exact scenario...

Thank you all for your help. Per one of your comments I have reached out to AIS Auto Insurance Specialists. They said take a pic from each of the four exterior sides Then take a pic from front looking back inside bus. Lastly take a pic from interior rear looking towards windshield. I did and sent those via email. In a “couple days” I should hear if they will cover me or if they will have to try and cover me under their commercial vehicle policy.

Sounds like they may help me. Many thanks too all and I will keep you posted.

Oh and Allstate (said in deep voice) sent me a email saying sorry we had to cancel because the VIN says it’s a Box Truck. Total BS. I registered it this morning and there are a zillion versions of the 2001 GMC Savana the town hall had to scroll through and I’m think they didn’t even find the right one. Thanks for the help.
