It worked for me. I did it just like it said in the first few posts.
I did write a note detailing what I wanted. And fibbed a little about how my seats were removed. But they will be removed this week so... Click image for larger version

When I purchased insurance to move my Bookmobile from WV back to NY, they used the VIN. Won't this VIN still show up as a Commercial vehicle , and if so, whats the difference? I'm only paying 666 a year and that includes comprehensive. I haven't registered it yet and I'm close enough to VT, but is there an advantage?

I never got around to calling Vermont to change the registration to bus and it worked out just fine.

I attempted to add the bluebird Bookmobile on my auto policy, they wouldn't touch it. They run the VIN, see it's commercial and run scared. Can you tell me what you did/what NY insurance carrier you used? I'm up in the 'dacks.

Three weeks to the DAY! Got the bus while house sitting in Athens, GA; I’m licensed in NC, and now I got VT plates. The re-title was a success too, it was changed from BU to MH on the form I got with the plates.

Thanks warewolff!

If anybody is curious, I talked to a woman on the phone today at the Vermont DMV call center who told me that they are just now opening mail from the 14th, so if you sent your stuff in around then expect to hear back soon!

In some states, like Washington, there is little communication between insurance companies and the state.

Here registration and title have little impact on insurance.

I have insured vehicles here that were registered in another state with no trouble.

My question is what the reason for registering as MH if there is no financial gain?
When I spoke to progressive I had to register under my Business name.
Unless the DMV reports change of use on VIN , I presume progressive wouldn't have any way of knowing it's a MH not a bus.
Am I missing something?

Sent you a PM. If you're registered in Vermont you should have no issue insuring in NY.

I was not clear.

The insured use has significant impact on insurance costs. What I meant is that how it is registered does not necessarily dictate how it is insured.

My bus is registered as an RV. I have not met my insurance company's requirements for RV insurance yet so they will only insure it as commercial vehicle for personal use.

Hence, vehicle type on the title does not alway dictate how it is insured.

Also, in some states, you are required to have an enhanced license to drive a full size bus unless it is registered as an RV.

I have a commercial policy with Progressive (the only one I could find) they were unable to insure as a MH, as the VIN was 2 passenger bus. BS if you ask me!
So I'm wondering HOW you get the insurance company to insure as a MH, if all they use is the VIN? I received a 666 a year quote, including 500$ deductable comp, so guess I'm probably wouldn't save $ as a MH. My bookmobile has hydraulic brakes and is under 26000 gvw.

Will I save $ on insurance?
I don't understand, is it cheaper?
I'm trying to wrap my head around it all...

Again, depends on your state.

If the only choices are MH vs commercial then yes.

Find a good agent in your area and ask them

So in Massachusetts, my only option is to register my bus commercial until the conversion is done.. commercial reg is about 400 a year. The commercial insurance is about 600 a year.
As an "auto home" (Mass version of motor home) registration would be about $60.00. the insurance would probably be cheaper too. The other consideration is commercial drivers license while it is registered commercial. My bus requires one (costs about an extra $100 in fees and about $150 every 2 years for a med exam)
So it is all around cheaper to reg as a motor home... The downside is finding insurance on a skoolie, especially if the conversion isn't complete.

I understand the registration dynamic then, that make sense!, I'll have to see in NY the difference in cost...has anyone on here in NY made a comparison? I haven't even checked with DMV but if it's too high I'll go the VT route. I'm only 2 hrs away
Thanks NJsurf73

I don't know how your insurance company will handle it. It varies by state and carrier. My experience with State Farm in Washington was that I had to submit pictures of the completed conversion for approval by underwriting.

Again it varies but for me, full coverage RV insurance cost roughly the same as liability only on a commercial for personal policy.
