anyone in indiana have any luck transferring your title back to indiana? I have been rejected by two BMVs so far. My bus is 15+ years so i only have the registration. I also have my bill of sale, proof of sales tax, and police officer vin inspection.

any recommendations on bmv locations where they might be able to help me out with this?

Went and tried another BMV location today… They told me that according to their books, Vermont law says you get a title for an RV/motorhome and even if it’s over 15 years. What???

I’m going to call the Vermont to service center when they are open again on Monday and ask for clarification. I guess I’ll also keep trying different BMV locations…

All,

Do the Vermont title documents arrive "signature required" from the post office?

The green plates just showed up in the mailbox, and I received a pink notice that a letter arrived that I have to sign for.

Hmmm...

Could it be your title?

That was my guess but I can not make to the PO when they are open until next week.

Just asking if others had to sign for their title documents.

WooT!!!

Got my plates today. I followed the instructions in the very first post in this thread.

Situation:
Bought a bus registered in Alabama from a dealer in Louisiana. Other than the title and bill of sale, I had no other paperwork or plates.

I got the bus, and insured it with Progressive- a commercial policy for personal use. I then drove the bus home to California.

I registered the bus in Vermont and about two weeks later I got the plates.

They changed body type to MH and crossed out where I typed in YELLOW.

Other than that - no changes. I should get the title on the mail in the next couple of weeks.

Now I have a 2007 bus that is registered as a motorhome. As soon as I get the title I can register it in California as a motorhome without inspection and without emissions issues.

GREAT NEWS,

Glad they fixed the color. Now you can head to the paint store and order "not yellow"...

This is incorrect. Save yourself the phone call. You will not get a title from Indiana ... you will get a TRANSFERRABLE REGISTRATION when you transfer from VT to TN. If they give you problems, ask to speak to a supervisor.

Well - it’s done.

Bus purchased on 10/19/18 in Louisiana with an Alabama title
Sent the paperwork for registration and title transfer to a motorhome to the VT DMV on 10/21
Got plates on 11/9
Got registration, tags and title on 11/19

I now have a VT titled and registered YELLOW motorhome with a California address.

Congratulations, great result!

How long will you roll that way?

Is CA your legal domicile?

Thanks!

Well, I have to have owned the bus for a minimum of 90 days otherwise I have to pay tax in CA - I already paid in VT. So at least 90 days. But since it's an RV now, I figure that there is no real need to register it in CA. Since the end goal for me is a Chicken Bus style paint job and bling (see profile pic) I am entertaining the idea of having dual registration - one here in the states and one in Guatemala.

Currently CA is my legal state of residence, but again, with an RV/Skoolie, the idea is to wander, so I don't know that it matters much.

Check out the laws on when you are legally required to register in CA.

Either keep it mostly hidden long-term, or store it out of state when not in use, and carry the proof that is what you do.

Thanks - I am not concerned with this as when not in use, I am on a flag lot with acreage and while it's visible from the street, it's off the street by over 200' and when on the road, well... I'm on the road.

The rules in CA are that it must be registered within 30 days of purchase if a CA resident or becoming a resident of the state.

OK, long as you know, I've heard some stories about CA enforcing that sort of stuff a lot more stringently than other states.

Just bought a bus.........

How would you guys approach this?

I am picking up a bus purchased from a school district in a week.

Once I get it I will have a signed over title in hand.

The bus is 24 years old.

Can I start registration in Vermont with a copy of that Title, or do I need to go to my local CA DMV and do a title transfer first to get a CA title, and then proceed with my Vermont Registration?

Send in original title to Vermont and follow instructions as written. California will likely not let you register a skoolie unless it is already converted to an RV by state standards and then you'll have to pass emissions and smog test as well. You'll have plates and a registration in 3-4 weeks if you go directly through Vermont.
