I expect that most states are similar.

So with VT plates I can go anywhere except VT? I love VT.

I expect that most states are similar.
And nothing to do with the owner being "a resident", most states just base it on **the vehicle** remaining in state.

Property taxes too.

See the above speculation about automated license plate readers all over the place. . .

Sent my paperwork in two days ago, now we just wait and see if I did it all correctly.

Got my plates!

Got my VT plates last week, only took 2 weeks!

What's interesting is that they shipped them with a stamped copy of my application, but no registration (I was expecting a transferrable, since my bus just turned 15 the day before I mailed it). Does the reg come separate?

It does. Should come in a few days, with the tags.

Here's my question: Most of the info I have read on these Vermont documents seem geared toward titling a vehicle upon transfer of ownership. What if I want to acquire a title as a motorhome for a bus that is ALREADY titled to me in another state?

Big difference though is that SD registration must be done in person, I'm pretty sure. You need never set foot in VT to register there.

For people who travel continuously, SD is often a good choice as a state of residence because they actively encourage "nomads" to become residents by allowing a receipt for a single day of rent in an RV park or motel to qualify as proof of residency for a drivers license or other photo ID.

Ah, that could be. I was under the impression that the only in-person requirement was for Driver's License though but I could have glossed over the finer details....it's hard to wrap my head around some of this stuff sometimes. We're planning on going the SD domicile route when we start full timing.

I was in the same boat. Titled to me in Indiana. I was able to use VD119 (same form everyone else uses) to transfer it to Vermont. It seemed to work fine for me.

Got Plates

I had an unexpected day off, so I took a drive to VT. A little over two hours each way, went to a little satellite DMV office with four windows and about 10 people ahead of me. I walked out in less than 30 minutes with plates. They didn’t even look at my bill of sale or vin verification. Just my application (made a couple minor corrections) and title.

In BC, you can't move a vehicle without a licence and insurance - I've bought several vehicles at auction in Alberta, ( 600 miles from home ) - to permit it to get them home, I had to phone my nearest ICBC outlet and give them the information, then get someone from home to go to the outlet with cash to pay for the permit, then the auction had to supply them with VIN etc, before I was insured and permitted - then the auction itself filled out the papers and I was able to drive home - it was a bit awkward to put it all together, but I was done and legal in about two hours - at one time I could phone our small town ICBC outlet and tell them what I was getting, they would confirm with the auction that I was insured and the papers were filled out there, then once home, I'd go to the outlet and pay for the permit - laws have been changed since - now personal contacts and reputation plus $2.50 will get you a cup of coffee - lol

Hard to hate. At my DMV when I go in there's 6 girls to take care of me and no one else in the office. I live in a small town.

I'm in a small town too, but that means the three DMVs are each over 45min away.

Fastest is 2-3 hours, and that's only by queuing up 30min before opening time and having all your ducks in a row.

Never seen any DMV with much under a hundred customers in line after 9:30am.

We had a discussion about this in another thread. I went into my DMV and stood back and took a pic of the empty building at like 10:30am on a Wed. , 6 windows with girls at your service. I hear from behind the counter "Taking a pic of how empty" I said Yep, they won't believe me without a pic. I posted a couple, but don't remember what thread it was. Can't remember anyone else in there the few times I have been. I love it.

Drivers license department, that's a different story

One's County and the other is State run. Driver services are in the next town south, 12miles or so, county court house is 2.5 miles from the house.
