Mine has VAN on the title, but the VIN still says BU. I think I'll just avoid going to Canada to avoid the confusion.

I said it was a RV when they asked what make & model they realized it was a conversion & said no

I'm at the tag office right and the clerk insists that whatever the vin is registered, that's what it will be registered as.... so I guess a Bus. Will this affect my insurance rates to go up?

I've heard more than once that GA is a huge hassle and yeah lots of folks have been told in Ga that "once a bus always a bus" thing.

Thank you for the quick response, my question would be that are there any disadvantages of it being a bus rather than a motor home? Besides insurance rates being higher

If you tell most insurance companies that your boss is a converted School Bus they will drop you

Correct.
Yeah, I left BOTH mine as buses on the title. They're $600 a year each to insure. Talk to a local agent, don't call ins companies directly and volunteer any info about converting a bus.
Just tell them you want a policy for personal use.

Several of us have had luck with registering as a van in difficult states.

Bondsman, yes. That will work.

The instructions at the top of page 3 of the 2016 version of VT119 (VIN Verification [Instructions]) says "Visual verification of the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your vehicle is required if the vehicle will be titled and: was last registered/titled in another state" - so if you are registering a 15 year or newer bus using an out of state title - you should probably VIN Reg. It does seem as though there's an even chance you might get your stuff through, as werewolf suggests. Its possibly a language modification to the old regulation with a "grandfather" period ... or certain clerks are still stuck in the old regulation mode. In any case the language will be the only way sooner or later. Its a bummer b/c its a pain in the keester to get VIN Reg done without taking your bus somewhere w/o proper reg/plates.

It worked!!!

I was a little worried this might not work since I bought the bus in Oregon and my home address is in Washington but I followed all the steps and it totally worked! Woo hoo! My bus is legal!

I drove up to the vermont dmv to do this and while here they said I have 15 days to get a vermont vehicle inspection. How do people who register from out of state get around that?

If you don't travel in VT, no cop out of state can write you for a Vermont inspection.

After being away from home for 3 days, my pretty green plate greeted me today in the mailbox. Now to wait for the registration.

I just did the same thing today. I currently going to hope for the best and not get it inspected right now as I know I will fail. I'm trying to research more on the fine / scheme of what happens if not registered.

I will be travelling some in VT with my bus so it may affect me.

VT tax

Hey thanks so much for these instructions. I have a question concerning the VT sales tax. Im about to buy a bus in NY and will be using this method to register it. If I pay the sales tax on the purchase here in NY do I have to pay sales tax to VT as well? Thanks again
