Insurance in New York State

Little bit of an emergency over here.

I had found a policy, finally got someone to insure me
1 - Live in Brooklyn NY, no other vehicles/so no other vehicles on a policy
2 - Garaged at parents' in NJ or friends' in Upstate NY
3 - Converted bus, obviously
The underwriting department just contacted me and told me they need pictures of all sides and interior to show vehicle type... said if it's a school bus that the policy will be canceled 09/03/13. Told them it's a school bus, no point in taking pictures that show that anyway.
I had JUST gotten the vehicle registered and gotten my tags. Literally had just gotten home and posted on Skoolie.net about it when I get my call.

I am panicking, please help me find a policy!!!

Re: Insurance in New York State

I think GMAC is the seems to be the provider of choice with school buses (of the mainstream insurance companies, at least). Mine is insured through Progressive, but they no longer insure school buses. -_- I will likely change it at some point though, as I don't want to have an issue if I do get in an accident.

I have mine insured as a non comercial bus with just liability until it is converted thru Progressive. $400.00 year. There are many places to get insurance. Good Sam will do it. Just search for RV insurance and you will find the info you need.

Re: Insurance in New York State

For what it is worth, mine is insured, as a motorhome, and listed as an international bus. Progressive hasn't dropped me yet, but I am taking a risk leaving it. Maybe you could quick do it online through progressive, until you find an alternative? It is super easy to do online. I'm paying about twice what bansil is, but I have more than just liability.

Wow... how had I tried 25 different insurance companies before but not progressive?
Just got a new policy from them. Admitted STRAIGHT UP that it was a Ford Bus with the seats stripped and turned into a hardwood floor studio. $215 or so, PAINLESS, and by the way, almost half what I had paid for my other policy!!

Re: Insurance in New York State

AWESOME!! I just checked and that is exactly what I am paying. I see on the website where it still says they don't insure school bus conversions, but I just went through my contract and it does not state that ANYWHERE. Also, I don't believe I insured it as a conversion. I simply got "motorhome insurance" for an international bus

Re: Insurance in New York State

I talked to my agent and they listed mine as a non- commercial bus, ie... no seats and not hauling anything for profit. Like I said, Maryland is very expensive for insurance.

When I start travelin, I will move my residence and not pay the Maryland price.

Glad it worked out for you.

Re: Insurance in New York State

Interesting reports. I had my last bus insured with Progressive at a great rate and even with comprehensive coverage, but with the understanding that they would only insure as a bus; once converted it wouldn't be covered. Sold that bus and some months later bought another, and in April 2013 Progressive told me they would no longer cover a bus. Maybe now they've changed their stance again. I ended up with GMAC, now National General, who were happy to cover it but with liability only. They said they won't do comprehensive unless the conversion is done by a professional upfitter.

Did you get a commercial or Personal RV plan? Did you tell them you would be traveling in it? I'm having a really tough time! I'm also in NY.

Reading through the whole thread again, I wonder how everyone is getting insurance through Progressive at such low rates?! I tried them and told them it was an International 3000 empty shell of a truck that would be my 'woman cave' but I'd need to drive it some of the time....I got a quote of $1400+ !!! Ofcourse I didn't take it!!
But...........................I just got a call back from State Farm and they full out know it's a school bus and I'm insured for $735/yr. Ok, that's still high but I took it while I look at other insurance companies. I think I'm going to call Progressive back because I think it's just a matter of who you talk to. I didn't try GMAC (now Nat Gen) yet so I'll call them too.
sheeeesh. New York is awful.

my Progressive.. i called their COMMERCIAL deparetment.. not onlineand not their consumer based line.. and set it up as commercial vehicle for personal use.. mny VIN pulled up as an International '380'.. not 3800 for some reason but the VINB was correct.. both my busses show as that.

they did ask if my busses are staying busses and i answered yes.. (and thats truthful in my case).. one of my busses is titled and registered as a Motorhome and the other is titled / registered as a Bus.. im guessing different States have different regulations so insurance companies charge different rate sets based o nthe state.
