Insurance - WA State - Can't find insurer
Hello:
I am in the process of picking up the school bus I just bought which is partially converted. I'm organizing the RV registration and insurance, etc, but I can not seem to find any insurance companies that will insure a converted school bus.
Do you know a company that I can call who does indeed insure these types of vehicles? I have a super clean driving record.
Any help you could offer would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Chrissy

National General tells me they will insure any state but NC, which is unfortunately where I'm from, so I'm switching my registration to SD like most full time RVer's do. Hopefully that will fix it. If they were telling me the truth, you should be able to get insurance with them in WA.

Since it's partially converted it should be registered and titled
as a motor home. We just called our insurance broker and told
them we needed insurance for our Bluebird motor home and
they added it on to our auto policy. We are in Bellevue.

Whatever you end up doing...don't mislead your insurer. The last moment that you want them to find out what you really have is when you are at their door with a claim... they are not forgiving people and might refuse to honor.

Thank you, Dragonpop! Good to know. What broker do you go through? And/or what company ended up covering the bus?
I have my other vehicle insured through Geico, but they don't cover converted school buses.
I appreciate your help!

Hi Georgia:
No solution yet. Working on getting together the correct photos for National General // Good Sam and researching local brokers. I will post the solution when I get there.
Do you have any suggestions yourself?

Progressive- No
Good Sam - No, we got denied because of some non accident related claims.
National General Insurance (Or TAG-York Insurance Agency) - won't cover a converted bus
Farm Bureau - No, won't cover vehicle type
Trusted Choice - Waiting for a call back
RV America Insurance - still need to call them
AIS Recreational Vehicle Insurance - this MAY (cross your fingers) be the one. Waiting for their review, but only can provide liability if approved.
Western Association of Automobile Insurance Plans - will try this if nothing else.
I'll keep you posted, please do the same for me. Good luck!

They told me that they cover absolutely any state but NC. Why did they say they wouldn't cover you?

It was the particular agency that told me they don't cover these vehicles. I am in the process of filling appeals with National General through AIS and Good Sam. The agency is not the same as the underwriter.

Ah, ok, that makes a bit more sense. One time when I talked to National General they told me they didn't even have a product that does bus conversions and they'd never heard of it before. I guess it really does depend on the individual you get on the other end of the phone.

Chrissy! We got insurance though AIS, underwritten by National General. It's only liability, but it's better than nothing! Any luck yet?

Farm Bureau worked for us when no one else did. Ours is titled as a "house car" which is NC's RV designation. The agent said she had to have it "seated" which is an insurance term that has something to do with high-risk cases. Do you have your title changed yet?

Yes. It's titled as an RV.
